Review - Camel Up Ed1 board game base set for Camel Up Ed1 from Pegasus Spiele

Opening the package

The content is great. You get tons of stuff in the box. The pyramid is a bit gimmicky, but fits the theme fine, and the younger players will love it.

Review

It's one of the best race and betting simulation game. Yes, it's random, but races are random. I've been to the races and I have to say it gives me a similar feeling. I think the game is perfect for this. You don't have to calculate your chances if you don't want to, but it adds to the game if you can calculate the possibilities. It's also a good game for children to learn the basics of probabilities.

It's also great that every single action affects the game - there's no grinding and waiting for your opportunity. If you can't come up with some clever tactic, you can still opt to roll the dice, and you'll get rewarded for this, whatever results you get.

The semi-antagonistic nature of the game is also interesting, as players don't actively try to hurt the others, just try to get the most out of the situations. There is not much you can do to actively hinder your opponents, but you can change their chances of winning through your strategy. It means there's less things to get mad about and less arguments for your group.

I think it's a very good game for a very broad age group - people of different ages and tastes can find something to enjoy playing this game. The youngsters can enjoy rolling the colourful dice from the cardboard pyramid and stacking the camels on each other, even if they don't really understand the probabilities. The older players can enjoy building up a strategy, all the while trying different tactics to affect the bets of other players.

What can you get out of it?

Physical Components: There are a couple of components you can put to use for other games.

  • Money: The cardboard coins can be used for any kind of games, even fantasy ones. The paper money is useful only for modern games.
  • Pyramid: It could be used for other miniature games.
  • Pyramid for rolling: At the moment I can't recall any game that uses a similar rule, but you can come up with some own version for it.

Rules: The betting rules are pretty good and they simulate the feeling of betting well enough to be useful for any kind of games.

Verdict

I'm a bit undecided. While I would love to have this game, the price is a bit high for the physical content. However the fun factor is also very high.

If you have a chance to play it, I'd absolutely recommend it. If you are about to receive a game and you can choose which one, and Camel Up is one of them, choose this one. If you have enough funds to buy this game, buy it. This game is one of my favourites.

Now that the second edition is also out there, you might want to try that too, and decide which one fits you more. The second edition is a so much more random, you basically loose the possibility to predict your chances through mathematical probabilities.
