Review - Recruit Edition set for Warhammer 40,000 Ed9 from Games Workshop
The gaming mat shown on the preview photos is not the exact one you get in the box. The one in the set has starter zones marked on it, just like the First Strike Playing Mat in the Ed8 First Strike Starter Set. I assume my review of that gaming mat is also true to this one.
The Transfer sheet is advertised as being the same one that you get in the other 9th edition starter sets, but it's actually smaller, and only has Ultramarine iconography. The Transfer sheet is probably the same one you get in the First Strike, and Easy to Build Intercessors set.
Opening the pack
The outer box is thin, and when you open it, it's prone to get torn. The same problem was true for the Warhammer 40.000 Ed8: First Strike Starter Set.
The gaming mat
The gaming mat included in the WH40K Recruit Edition and WH40K Elite Edition is the same shiny paper mat. It's half the size compared to the recommended gaming area size for the smallest game. It works okay with the beginner scenarios provided in the manual for the boxed set, but you'll need two gaming mats for a Combat Patrol / Incursion sized game, four gaming mats for a Strike Force sized game, and eight gaming mats for an Onslaught sized game.
