Review - Command Edition set for Warhammer 40,000 Ed9 from Games Workshop

The package is similar to the Warhammer 40,000 Ed9: Elite Edition set, but twice as wide. Another difference is that the inside tray is not a printed scenery. (Which is an oversight by my opinion.)

The rulebook is A5 sized, similar to the older style 40K starter set rulebooks.

The package

The other starter sets for 9th edition of Warhammer 40K include a printed Archaovault terrain piece as the inside tray for the box. However, the inside tray in the Command Edition has printed art about sculptures on it, that could be used as a vertical terrain piece with some imagination. For example, it could be the wall of a crypt.

The game board

The game board included in the WH40K Command Edition boxed set has the same pattern, with the same scenario markings as the shiny paper mat that comes in the WH40K Recruit Edition and WH40K Elite Edition. It's half the size compared to the recommended gaming area size for the smallest game. It works okay with the beginner scenarios provided in the manual for the boxed set, but you'll need two gaming mats for a Combat Patrol / Incursion sized game, four gaming mats for a Strike Force sized game, and eight gaming mats for an Onslaught sized game.

The game board has the similar style background artwork as the one in the Command Edition Battlefield Expansion Set, but it's not the same, and the two sets compliment each other. The board in the expansion is folded in four, while this one is folded in three. Also, the one in the Command Edition set comes with scenario markings. I would have preferred if they just included the paper mat with the scenario markings, and print the cardboard version without them. The advertisement is misleading on this part, as they show the boards without the markings. If you have the Command Edition, the Command Edition Battlefield Expansion Set provides you with the right amount of scenery, and the right size for the minimum game size for the 9th Edition of 40K.

(The advertisement for the Battlefield Expansion Set is also misleading, because it shows both the Command Edition board and the Expansion Set board, while you only get the latter in that box.)

The scenery

The Command Edition pipes are a couple of millimeters thinner than the previous Sector Mechanicus pipes. The Sector Mechanicus pipes still fit into the pipe connectors on the Command Edition buildings. The bottoms of the pipe supports and the machinery piece is open, as they are designed to be used on the ground that covers that opening, but it's easy to cover it with a piece of card if you are bothered by that. (I'd probably do that to allow more versatile use.) The backside of the machinery has a circular motif, probably allowing you to connect another pipe to that part.

The straight pieces are 13 cms long. The downward piece is 14 cms long. The broken pipes are 7 cms long. The machinery is 6 cms long. The pipes are ca. 3 cms wide.

The Command Edition buildings are push-fit models, with integrated connectors that hold the pieces together without the need for glue. They are really well designed scenery pieces, and I think they should be used as a template for other terrain pieces as well.

The undersides of the horizontal floor pieces are undetailed. I feel this is unfortunate, and slightly limits the use of the scenery. I would have preferred even a totally flat side compared to those blobs we got. It's also strange, because the vertical pieces all fully detailed, even the upper parts of the inside walls, that are probably just as much visible as the undersides.

They have the same level signs at probably 2" (50mm) heights as the Sector Mechanicus buildings. However, Command Edition buildings have the floors on the second increment, while the Sector Mechanicus buildings have the floors on the third. This makes a 1 level Sector Mechanicus building 2" taller.
