Review (spoiler-free) - We Are the Missing, movie (2020)

I somehow ran into this movie, the concept sounded interesting, so I thought to give it a try without watching the trailer.

The We Are the Missing movie is about a film crew trying to find out what happened to a missing girl.

It has a mildly interesting concept, with a boring execution. There's no consistency in the story. There are no character arcs.

The beginning is in a good image quality, and more believable. It was a good start for the movie. But then, as they started to add more outlandish ideas, the creators also started to add low quality clips to fit the theme of home videos, but even then, there was an editor in the story, who made the home videos jump zoom to make it look more amateurish, but I've felt that was a detriment to the movie itself. Many parts of the film look bad. They try to make the movie visually interesting by using some computer graphics, like soundwaves, but I've found them taking me out of immersion.

The characters are not particularly interesting, the only one we got to know slightly is the one who is not even shown, just talked about. The actors were good and likeable, I think they got the most out of the material they've got. They also felt really natural.

The music (by Tyler Matthews & Raymond Richmond) is not very memorable, but at least it means that it was not distracting.

We Are the Missing is a boring faux documentary supernatural horror, I don’t think even fans of the genre would enjoy it.

My experience

I was not satisfied with We Are the Missing (2020).

Rating: Bad (1 out of 3 points). We Are the Missing is a pointless film.

Enjoyment: Bad (1 out of 3 points). We Are the Missing was boring for me.

Rewatchability: Low. I think it's mostly the surprise of the story that makes you feel interested.

Chance of watching it again: No.

Chance of watching a sequel: Unlikely.

Will you enjoy this?

If you like supernatural mystery movies, you might like We Are the Missing.

If you like horror movies (Absentia (2011), Grave Encounters (2011)), you might like the film, although there are not a single scary scene in the We Are the Missing movie.

If you like found footage style horror films, you might be interested in this.

If you prefer jump scare ghost movies, this movie is probably not for you.

If you prefer visuals over story, this film will probably feel lacking.

Watching for plot points

If you are interested in ghost stories, it might be worth watching the We Are the Missing movie for the plot points.

Should you watch this on your own screen at home, or is it worth going to the cinema?

The visuals probably look better if you watch it in on a small screen.

Review with spoilers - We Are the Missing, movie (2020)

I didn't like the We Are the Missing movie.

Cover

The cover of the movie is okay, it doesn't say much, but it doesn't spoil the movie.

The trailer

I couldn't find a trailer for the movie.

Promise of the first scene

We will see a professionally made documentary about a kid who went missing.

Execution: While we did get the story of the missing kid, the quality of the movie quickly degraded, as we started to get home video clips. The missing kid plot went into an urban legend about a ghost, then it started to get confusing. If the first scene started with hints about those ghosts, it would have been better.

Plot summary / Synopsis

The movie is a documentary, made by an amateur film-maker from clips gathered from news, YouTube videos, and some home made videos sent to him.

The movie within the movie starts with interviews with the father (Mark Templin as John Madison) and mother (Maissa Houri as Angie Madison) of a 20 year old girl (Chantel Little as Riley Madison). The girl went missing, even though her shoes are still at home. We are told that missing girl had an imaginary friend. We are also introduced to the concept of a local urban legend of a ghost that haunts the woods. We get news that more and more people disappear without a trace. Then news about ghosts appearing throughout the city. Then it ends with stories about a good ghost (one of the missing kids) protecting people from the bad ghosts.

The setting

It is set on contemporary fantasy Earth, where ghosts exist.

The ghosts

There are bad ghosts who make people disappear.

There is at least one good ghost, who helps people against the bad ghosts.

The message of the story

I'm not sure there's one.

The structure of the story

The story plays in a sequential frame, with video clips played sometimes repeatedly, placing them out of order.

There is no single viewpoint character.

There's no real dramatic structure to the film, most of it is a very long introduction, with a quick reveal at the end, acting as a sort of resolution.

Analysis of the story - We Are the Missing, movie (2020)

I didn't like the story, there were so many problems that prevented me from enjoying We Are the Missing.

Problematic elements

Unanswered questions

* * *

Possibilities of improvement

One of the problems were that it was longer than the amount of ideas it contained. A heavy cutting could solve the problem of being boring.

How it could have been better?

I'd prefer the addition of more ideas, probably in the vein of Mothman Prophecies (2002), as it is very similar.
