This is my review of Visitors, a contemporary fantasy thriller / comedy TV series from 2022. It's about a police officer trying to do his job while strange things happen in his town. The Visitors film has some good episodes, but I only recommend it to dedicated fans of the genre.

Overall review (spoiler-free) - Visitors, TV series (2022)

I didn't know anything about the series, when I ran into it. The premise sounded interesting, so I gave the series a try. I didn't watch the trailer.

The Visitors TV series is about a police officer trying to do his job while strange things happen in his town.

The basis of the plot is good, even the actual execution has some merits, but overall, for me, the story was somewhat disappointing. The consistency is erratic - it starts with slow and boring episodes, then suddenly switches to good episodes near the end. I liked that the elements were established before being used, and the foreshadowing was fine. For me, the worst parts were probably the attempts at humour in the early episodes. Some might find this kind of juvenile humour funny, but I didn't. There is a character arc for the main protagonist. I didn't find major logical problems.

The cinematography is watchable. The special effects are okay. The action scenes are acceptable.

The main character has some back story, but most of the others are just empty stereotypes. Some of the background characters get more backstory than the main cast. The actors are okay.

The music (by Polérik Rouvière) is acceptable.

Visitors is a watchable contemporary fantasy thriller / comedy, that I think fans of the genre might enjoy.

My experience

I was not entirely satisfied with Visitors (2022). I prefer series with a more consistent episode quality, and Visitors couldn't deliver that. However, I'm not disappointed that I've watched the series.

Rating: Average (2 out of 3 points). Visitors is a watchable series if you watch the whole season. The first episodes are weak, though.

Enjoyment: Average (2 out of 3 points). Visitors as overall fun, but I had to endure the first few episodes to start enjoying it.

Rewatchability: I'm not sure. I think it's mostly the surprise of the story that makes you feel interested, but if the kind of humour that's in the series amuses you, it might be fun to watch this more than once.

Chance of watching it again: No. Even the good episodes were not good enough to merit a rewatch.

Chance of watching a sequel: Probably. There were some good elements in the series, and I hope the creators will get better next time.

Will you enjoy this?

If you like mystery or thriller movies, you might like Visitors, although it's not very tense.

If you like horror or action thriller movies (Invasion of the Body Snathers, The Blob), you might like the film, although there are not many action scenes or scary scenes in the Visitors series.

If you'd like to get comedic moments in your films, Visitors has some attempts at them.

If you can get through the first episode of the series still interested, the rest will be something similar, although not always as good as the first one.

If you don't mind illogical elements in your movies, you can enjoy this.

If you like to be surprised by the development of events, this movie is not for you. Practically every twist is shown earlier, spoiling the surprises.

If you like twists, you might enjoy this series a lot, as it's very hard to predict what's going to happen.

If you hate subtitles, you don't have to worry, the series has English dubbing.

If you prefer visuals over story, this series is not for you.

If you hate comedy, you should avoid the Visitors series.

Do you need to see the whole season to enjoy this?

If you don't enjoy the first episode very much, after that, you can skip to Episode 6, and watch the series onward. If there's anything you don't understand in those episodes, just read the plot summary.

Do you need to see the second season to enjoy this?

We'll see. We'll also see whether it will have a second season. Although the plot concludes in the last episode, it still ends in a cliffhanger, leaving the viewer unsatisfied.

Watching for plot points

If you are interested in alien invasion stories, it might be worth watching the Visitors movie for the plot points, although you might just read the summary for the first few episodes.

Episode review with no spoilers - Visitors, TV series (2022)

Episode 1

The episodes establishes the characters and the plot. It was not very exciting, but it was acceptable. The only weak points were the attempts at humour, but even those were tolerable. Although not impressed, but I'm still slightly curious about the series. One of its advantages is the short runtime, the episode was not boring to watch.

The episode ends with a mild shocker / cliffhanger, preparing the series.

Episode 6

A change of pace episode, set 40 years earlier, showing the backstory of the older characters. This was a very good episode, the editing was good, the juvenile humour was absent. I wish the rest of the series were as good as this episode. Some of the storylines get continued from the previous episode.

Another change of pace episode, that's actually pretty good. It ties up all of the hanging plotlines that were started previously. The editing is great, makes an otherwise average story interesting. Review with spoilers - Visitors, TV series (2022)

I mostly liked the Visitors TV series, but it has ups and downs during the season.

Cover

The cover of the series is okay, it doesn't say much, but it doesn't spoil the story.

The trailer

The trailer is okay, although it spoils some minor parts of the series, and probably makes it look more interesting than it actually is.

Promise of the first scene

We see something fall from the sky. Based on the premise and the title "Visitors", I assume it's an alien spaceship or a meteor, carrying a living organism.

The second scene shows a police officer, preparing for his first day. I assume it will be him, who will be tasked with the investigation, or he'll be the random guy, who runs into the contents of that alien thing.

Execution: Indeed, we did get those from the series.

The episodes - Visitors, TV series (2022)

I started to write a summary of the first scenes, but they didn't relate to the promise at all.

Plot summary / Synopsis

Ep1

We see something fall from the sky in a small town (Pointe-Claire). It falls to the farm of a man (François Frapier as John Collins).

We are introduced to a police officer (Simon Astier as Richard Garcia), preparing for his first day. His wife (Tiphaine Daviot as Nancy) is a real estate agent. The police officer used to work at a games store, with his friends - the tall friend (Vincent Desagnat as Mitch), and the chubby friend (Damien Jouillerot as Bob). However, he decided to sell the store, without telling this to his friends.

He is called to collect the cordon cones from the road, as the farm was closed off. He sees a guy in a hoodie who runs away from him. As he tries to chase the guy, he finds some strange thing in the woods. He brings it back to the the police, but they don't take him seriously. One of his colleagues (Jérémie Dethelot as Roger) gives him the address of a local science teacher they sometimes ask for help.

The police officer goes to the science teacher (Julie Bargeton as Jacqueline), and gives her that thing to examine.

Back at the police office, he is taking notes from the reports, when two agents (Antonia Buresi as Scolla & David Marsais as Muller) arrive, and take over the case from him.

After work, the police officer goes to the bar, where he sees again the guy in the hoodie. The police officer tries to catch the guy, and two of his friends join him. In the woods they find two shady guys, selling bootleg games to kids. After the rest of the police team takes away the suspects, he stays to look around the woods, and finds slime on the trees, and a crashed spaceship.

Episode 2

The police officer wants to report in the fallen spaceship through the radio, but the others pretend that they don't hear him. So he goes back to the office, but by the time they get back to the woods, there's nothing to be found. The agents visit him, telling him they need more evidence.

The police officer visits the science teacher, but somebody broke into her house and took the strange thing he brought to her, leaving a trail of slime. He goes back to the woods, where he accidentally runs over a humanoid. He brings it back to his friends, where they find it out it's a woman under the suit. The science teacher joins them, and treats the alien woman (Florence Loiret Caille as Frédérique), then leaves.

The police officer visits his grandpa (Henri Guybet as Robert Garcia), who lives in a home for elderly.

While they are asleep, the alien woman wanders tries to get back to the woods, but the police officer finds her. He brings her back to the police office, and sees that the agents leave a trail of slime. He has a sudden realisation that it might have been the agents who took the alien thing from the science teacher, so he declines to tell them about her. A man living in the woods (Arnaud Joyet as Carlos) tells him that something took his dog. The police officer decides that the alien woman should live with that man for her safety.

The agents get video footage from the two shady guy, showing the police officer helping the alien woman. They ask the shady guys to work for them.

The alien woman reveals to them that she fell because she crashed with another spaceship, that had less friendly passengers.

We see the guy in the hoodie standing before the window of the grandpa.

Episode 3

The alien woman reveals that she is a space police officer, and she tried to prevent the other aliens from infecting the Earth. Her communicator was damaged by the fall. They must act immediately to have a chance against the creatures. She tells them that the creatures tend to take things away. One of the friends sees the guy in the hoodie standing nearby.

We see that a slime creature infiltrates the police building. It makes the photocopy machine disappear, leaving a pool of slime.

The police officer brings the alien woman to his home.

Things start to disappear in the town.

Somebody tried to strangle the grandpa in the elderly home, but a nurse came by, so the attacker escaped, leaving a trail of slime. The police officer sees that slime comes out of the taps, so he visits the water reservoir, where he finds a slime creature, so he escapes.

The team tries to come up with a way to communicate with the home of the alien woman, so they decide that they'll use the local TV station to send a signal to the alien satellite orbiting the Earth.

The police officer finds it out that a slime creature is in his house, so he heads back there. He finds his wife and her lover together. While he searches for the creature, his wife stabs the thing.

They manage to send the signal, but slime creatures surround the tall friend working the transmitter, and he disappears.

Episode 4

A man dies from the attack of a slime creature, but the agents tell the police chief that he should report that the death occurred due to natural causes. He still asks the science teacher for a proper report. When they spend some time discussing her findings, the body disappears.

The shady guys follow the chubby friend to their camp in the woods, and report it to the agents.

The tall friend calls the police officer on the phone, and while he doesn't say anything, a female police officer (Delphine Baril as Sharon) identifies the background noise as coming from the radar station of the nearby military base. So they go to the military base, armed up with automatic rifles by the man living in the woods. They are attacked by a lot of small slime monsters. They are saved by military personnel. They find the fallen spaceship of the alien woman. The guy in the hoodie is also there, and when the police officer catches him, he turns out to be the father (Jean-Michel Fête as William) of the female police officer, who has gone missing a long time ago.

Episode 5

The police chief and the science teacher find the missing body, but the man seems to be alive.

The guy in the hoodie confesses to the police officer that they possess the bodies of people. They did steal things, but they didn't kill anybody. Although it was him who attacked the grandpa, because its host had strong aggressive urges against him. The guy tells him that everything will be destroyed and nothing will stop it.

They find the tall friend but he says that he joined the slime creatures willingly, and he'll go with them. Also, the dog of the man who lives in the woods died during the transporting process.

The police officer goes back to his grandpa, who gives him a key. He shows him a photo of the man who attacked him, and the female police officer recognises that it's her father. The key opens a safe at the grandpa's house, containing secret documents.

The agents find the alien woman.

Episode 6

The police officer starts reading the old files, and we see the events unfold.

1981: The grandpa (Christophe Guybet as Robert Garcia in 1981) of the police officer, the father (Jean-Michel Fête as William) of the female police officer, and the father (Yoni Dahan as Marco) of the man living in the woods are stationed at the new radar station, when it shows something falling down. They find a meteorite. The father takes it, and after that he starts to have blackouts. He becomes obsessed by the meteorite. When it disappears, he accuses the father of the man living in the woods, and shoot him dead. He visits the grandpa's house, where he finds the meteorite. The grandpa tries to calm him, but he tries to shoot the grandpa. However, the grandpa shoots better, knocking him down. A slime creature gets out of the meteorite, and attaches itself to the dying father. By the time the grandpa comes back from reporting the accident, the father disappears.

After the grandpa talks about the disappearance of the father, the wife of the father reveals that she is pregnant with the child of the grandpa. He asks her to keep this a secret.

The military captures the father, and contains him at the military base.

5 years ago: The grandpa is sitting on a bench when he has a sudden urge to shoot at a guy in military clothes. For safety reasons, he gets closed into a home for elderly.

Now: The female police officer confronts the guy in the hoodie who she thinks is her father, and pulls a gun on him, to avenge her mother.

Episode 7

The story starts after the events, where the two friends find themselves in handcuffs. They try to remember what happened last night.

The police officer had enough for that day, and wanted to spend some time with her wife, but her lover just calls, so instead he got to the bar, and got drunk. The chubby friend was sad because of the tall friend leaving them, so he got to the bar, and got drunk. The shady guys approached them and confessed they work for the agents. The science teacher and the colleague of the police officer is also there, so they started to drink together.

Back on the military base, the tall friend interrupted the female police officer when she drew a gun on the guy in the hoodie, and she ran away. The guy in the hoodie told the tall friend that he has to find a female before they leave, so he'll be able to reproduce. He got to the bar to meet a woman, but instead, he got drunk with the others.

They get out, meet with the drunk wife of the police officer, and they decide to set fire to the game store.

It turns out that the lover of the wife called her because the chubby friend closed him inside the store as he was handling the paperwork of selling the building. The wife got there, because she had enough of her lover. The lover was still inside when they set the store on fire, but luckily, he survived.

The agents tell them they've found the alien woman at their camp, but the man living in the woods arrived, and started to shoot them, letting the alien woman escape. The agents are able to get away unscathed. When a spaceship flies over them, they accidentally ran over the alien woman who tried to escape on the road. When she wakes up, her eyes are normal, not black.

The security guard (Vincent Deniard as Tyler) at the TV station recognised the alien woman, and it took him some time, but he remembered that it's a psychiatrist (Alice Bejm). He visits the psychiatrist to ask her about the incident at the TV station, but she doesn't understand him. So he kidnaps her, and drives her into the woods. When they drive by the escaping alien woman, who looks very similar to the psychiatrist, the psychiatrist uses the confusion to escape from him, but she gets in an accident with the agents.

The alien woman returns to the camp, when a spaceship arrives with an alien man (Pierre-Emmanuel, who looks just like the security guard, with black eyes).

Episode 8

The news report that a black hole approaches the Earth that will destroy everything.

6 years earlier: Tyler is rude to Richard, so he spikes with food with drugs before a sports event, so he gets suspended. After this, Richard has sex with Tyler's girlfriend, while he is still has a girlfriend, Jacqueline. The psychiatrist, Dr. Alice Bejm makes the verdict that Tyler didn't regret taking the drug, so he gets dismissed from the team. Nancy leaves to a university.

Now: The alien man is revealed to be the husband of the alien woman.

The science teacher agrees to leave with the tall friend but she cannot guarantee that they'll have sex.

The grandpa arrives at the military base with the police officer to apologise to the guy in the hoodie, but the guy living in the woods arrives and shoots the guy in the hoodie, for letting his dog die, and killing his father. The alien woman arrives, and takes a piece of her spaceship that was held by the guy in the hoodie.

4 years earlier: Nancy arrives back, leaving the university. They have sex with Richard. Later, they marry.

Now: The wife of the police officer gets a call that the slime creatures offered to take them all, but before she could leave, her lover arrives in bandages, holding her off. She misses the launch of the spaceship, but the police officer also stays to be with her.

The alien woman and the alien man also take off, and destroy the spaceship of the slime creatures before it could leave.

As the Earth is being destroyed by the black hole, the police officer finds a device that was left at him by the alien woman. He pushes the button, and finds himself on the world of the aliens, that looks just like his own town, but the inhabitants have black eyes.

The setting

Visitors is set in a contemporary fantasy Earth, probably the 2020s, where aliens exists.

The black eyed aliens

They look like humans, but their eyes are black. They don't seem to be able to digest human food.

The slime creatures

They are probably made of slime. They can change their shapes to fit through narrow tubes, so they can travel in the water pipes.

They take things away, making them disappear. This process often leaves a pool of slime.

They can attach themselves to the heads of human hosts. They can speak to other humans this way, as the connection allows them to translate their own thoughts through the mind of the host. The hosts doesn't seem to age. If the host has strong urges to do things it can override the control of the creature.

Analysis of the story - Visitors, TV series (2022)

I mostly liked the story, but the dramatic choices of the creators prevented me from enjoying the first couple of episodes of Visitors. However, the ending made the series okay for me.

The message of the story

I have absolutely no idea.

The structure of the story

The scenes of the Visitors film are played in sequence, following the same storyline. In Ep6, we are shown events from 1981.

There's no single viewpoint character.

The series has the usual arc of the dramatic structure - introduction, action, resolution. The individual episodes don't have this structure, and they usually end in a tense moment.

Fan-service

Scenes and elements from previous films:

E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (1982)

  • The protagonist tries to take the alien in the basket of his bicycle.

The X-Files (1993-2018-)

  • The agents are called Agent Muller and Agent Scolla, an obvious reference to Agent Mulder and Agent Scully.

Things I liked

  • The change of pace episodes (Ep6-7) were fun.

Problematic elements

Ep2

Living with Carlos: Richard doesn't even know the guy, but he decides that it's safer for Fred to live with him than with his friends. It's either a stupid decision, or those friends are extremely unreliable.

Ep3

Ringing the bell: After ringing the door bell, why do the agents run back to their cars, to hang back like cool guys? We don't see them running, but there was no time for them to walk after the ringing.

Ep4

The soldiers on the base: Why were there soldiers on the abandoned military base, that was infested by the creatures? It looks like the creatures took over the base a long time ago. They were able to build a whole spaceship there.

Ep7

Zombie from The Cranberries: I think the use of the song while setting fire to the store was inappropriate. I get it how the idea might have come, but the whole song is against violence, not pro-violence.

Kidnapping the psychiatrist: Although I understand that to create the comedic effect, the psychiatrist had to be wandering on the road, but it's not established why does Tyler kidnap her. He seems like a guy who would follow orders, not one to become a criminal on a whim.

Unanswered questions

  • Where is Richard at the end?
  • What will happen to Nancy?
  • Why did the aliens need the device, and why did she gave it to Richard when she finally got it?
  • Why does the alien guy who runs into the room just as the series ends look like Pierre-Emmanuel?

* * *

Possibilities of improvement

  • Ep1-5: Some of the jokes run for too long. Cutting them shorter might improve the story for people with a taste of humour similar to mine.

How it could have been better?

* * *

How does it compare to the other works of the creators?

I haven't seen any other works of the writer / director (Simon Astier). Based on this series, I'll be more cautious with his next works, although Ep6-7 were really good. So, I hope he'll make more of those in future.

Uses for the film - Visitors, TV series (2022)

Plot

  • Set in a contemporary fantasy setting.
  • An alien space police officer tries to prevent an evil alien invasion, but the space police officer crashes into the Earth.

  • Aliens take over human hosts.
  • Aliens crash landed on Earth build a spaceship from human technology to leave.
  • Aliens arrive to take a pair of humans, and memorabilia of humanity because a cosmic catastrophe will destroy the Earth.

Scenes

Ep1-8: The news reports could be used to depict news in a comedic story.

Ep4: The fight in the military base against the creatures could be used to depict a fight against some scuttler aliens.

Ep8: When the slime creature spaceship leaves, it's a good scene to show a spaceship leaving.
