Review (spoiler-free) - Thor 4: Love and Thunder, movie (2022)
I've seen the previous movies, and I knew that a sequel is in the works. Although I don't consider myself a fan of the MCU, I tend to watch the feature films. I don't really remember what happened in the previous episode. As usual, I wanted to avoid spoilers, so I took the opportunity to watch the film as soon as I can. I didn't watch the trailer.
I watched the movie in Hungarian, but I assume the translated dubbing is close to the original.
The Thor: Love and Thunder movie is about a guy trying to find some purpose in his life.
The plot is not very interesting, but it provides an acceptable background for the action scenes. The story is told by a narrator from a future point, taking away any chance of immersion. The consistency is okay, if you accept the narrative interruptions. There's no tension in the story, as there are no stakes for either of the characters. There is a minor character arc for the main characters. I didn't find major logical problems. There's plenty of comedy, both in the chosen style of narration, and in the dialogue.
The story feels like something out of the early Thor comic book stories, with interstellar adventures and lots of fighting. I like it that this movie was not burdened by MCU references like many previous films. My appreciation of the movie is also helped by the fact that I didn't really remember what happened in the previous movies. After refreshing my memory, the story of Love and Thunder feels out of place in the series, and the character of Thor feels like no advancement happened to his personality through the events of the beginning of the first Thor movie. Although, I feel Love and Thunder works fine as a stand-alone movie, unconnected to any other films.
The cinematography is watchable. The action scenes are good, it's easy to follow them. I didn't feel that the movie has imaginative scenes, but they still do their job. The special effects are seamless. There's a lot of depiction of violence and killings, although blood is seldom shown.
The characters are shallow, and it's not easy to believe their actions. The previously introduced characters act according to their established personalities. The actors do a fine job.
The music (by Michael Giacchino) is okay, although the constant use of Guns & Roses was a little too much. I would have preferred a more varied soundtrack. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies were better in this regard.
Thor 4: Love and Thunder is an acceptable futuristic fantasy adventure, that I think fans of the genre might enjoy.
My experience
I was mostly satisfied with Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). Although I prefer well-thought, logical plots, I also enjoy fun movies, and Thor 4: Love and Thunder delivered just that. It was enjoyable for one time, but it didn't give me anything new..
Rating: Good (2+ out of 3 points). Thor 4: Love and Thunder is a well-made and fun film.
Enjoyment: Good (2+ out of 3 points). Thor: Love and Thunder is interesting, I liked it. However, I admit it that I didn't really care about the previous Thor movies, so, if I had considered this not just a single movie in itself, but a part of the ongoing saga, I'd probably given it Average (2 out of 3), or an even worse rating, as I don't think it would really fit into that.
Rewatchability: High. If you liked it for the first time, I think you'll enjoy watching it multiple times.
Chance of watching it again: It was fun to watch it once, but I can't imagine wanting to watch this again.
Chance of watching a sequel: High. I'd sure watch it.

Will you enjoy this?
If you cannot miss any release related to the Marvel Universe, you'll watch this anyway.
If you like supernatural or fantasy movies, you might like Thor: Love and Thunder.
If you like action movies, you might like the film, as there are many action scenes in the Thor 4: Love and Thunder movie.
If you'd like to get comedic moments in your movies, Thor: Love and Thunder has plenty of it.
If you enjoyed the previous Thor movies, you might be interested in this story.
If you prefer visuals over story, this movie looks good.
If you hate romantic movies, there's so little romance I think this movie will be safe to watch.
If you hate comedy, you should probably avoid the recent Thor movies. And also, probably the rest of the MCU series.
If you hate depiction of violence, there's plenty of it in Thor: Love and Thunder, so this movie might not be for you.
Things you are required to know to enjoy this
I think everything is set up properly so you will understand what's happening without any background.
Do you need to see the previous films to enjoy this?
There's enough explanation that you'll understand what's going on without seeing the first film.
Watching for plot points
If you are interested in fantasy adventure stories, I think it's worth watching the Thor 4: Love and Thunder movie for the plot points.
Should you watch this on your own screen at home, or is it worth going to the cinema?
The visuals definitely look better if you watch it in cinema.

Review with spoilers - Thor 4: Love and Thunder, movie (2022)
I mostly liked the Thor: Love and Thunder movie.
I didn't read the Godbutcher storyline in the comics, but I didn't like the character as it was portrayed in the movie. It was hard for me to believe his sudden change from absolute believer to the destroyer of gods, and I also didn't like his comedic acts that worked against the chance to take him seriously as a villain.
Cover
The cover of the movie is okay, it doesn't say much, but it doesn't spoil the movie.
The trailer
If minor spoilers don't bother you, it's a good trailer.
Promise of the first scene
A guy prays for water in the desert. Water doesn't come, so his daughter dies. In the second scene he meets a god, has a chance to take revenge for his daughter, so he kills the god. I assume he'll go on killing gods, until he gets in a confrontation with Thor. They either fight, or - based on the title - fall in love? The latter would be interesting to explore.
Execution: No, they didn't fall in love, but they still got into a confrontation. So, that's okay, although not a very interesting promise.

Plot summary / Synopsis
A man (Christian Bale as Gorr) lives in a desert with his daughter. He prays for water, but it doesn't come, so his daughter dies. Some time later he meets his god, who just defeated a guy, who carried a god-killer sword. The god antagonises the man for believing that it will do him any good to serve the god. The man gets angry, the sword leaps into his hand, and he kills the god. The man swears that he will kill all of the gods.
Thor (Chris Hemsworth as Thor) is called to a fight by the Guardians of the Galaxy. He manages to take out all of the defilers of a temple, although he also destroys the temple.
Jane Foster (Natalie Portman as Jane Foster), Thor's ex-girlfriend is being treated for cancer, unsuccessfully. She thinks that Asgardian technology might cure her. She visits New Asgard, the Asgardian refuge on Earth. The broken pieces of the Mjölnir react to her.
The Guardians receive a number of distress signals. One of them belongs to Sif (Jaimie Alexander as Sif), a friend of Thor. Thor leaves the Guardians, and teleports to another planet with Korg, to save Sif. She warns him about the Godbutcher.
New Asgard is attacked by the Godbutcher's minions. Thor teleports in to help, but there's already a new champion there to save the settlement - Jane Foster, who uses Mjölnir. After Thor defeats the Godbutcher in combat, he escapes, but abducts the children of the settlement. With the help of Heimdall's son (Kieron L. Dyer as Axl), they are able to find out where does the Godbutcher keep the children. Thor, Korg, Jane and Valkyre (Tessa Thompson as Valkyre) take a ship, and start their journey to Omnipotent City, to find some gods to ask for help. They go to the Golden Temple, and watch the show of Zeus (Russell Crowe as Zeus). Thor asks for the help of Zeus. He refuses, and tells him that the Godbutcher won't be able to reach Eternity, thus getting his wish. But as he is afraid that Thor would lead the Godbutcher to their place, he insist that Thor stays there, They start fighting. Korg is seriously injured. Thor uses the Lighting of Zeus to hit Zeus. They steal the Lightning, and escape with their ship.
When they arrive in the Shadow Realm, it turns out that the Godbutcher lured Thor there to get his axe, allowing him to teleport to Eternity. They fight, Valkyre gets seriously injured, and in the end, the Godbutcher gets the axe. When they get back to Earth, it is revealed that Jane's body is weakened by the use of Mjölnir, so his cancer got worse. Thor leaves alone with the Lightning of Zeus.
The Godbutcher is at Eternity, but as he is occupied with getting the wish with the help of the axe, he leaves the children alone. Thor arrives, and grants the children magical powers with the use of the Lightning. The Godbutcher is about to defeat Thor, when Jane arrives. Thor gives the axe to Heimdall's son, so he can bring the children back home. Jane is able to break the god-killer sword, than uses some magic to turn it into dust. But by this time, the gate to the wish-granting place is open, and the Godbutcher enters. Thor follows him. When the Godbutcher is ready to make his wish, Thor reminds him that he could bring back his daughter, instead of killing all the gods.
The daughter is brought back to life. Jane dies, and goes to Valhalla. The Godbutcher also dies.
Thor takes the daughter and tries to be her father. In the end, we see them enter in a fight against an evil army of aliens.
In a mid-credit scene we see Hercules (Brett Goldstein as Hercules) being tasked by Zeus with defeating Thor.

Analysis of the story - Thor 4: Love and Thunder, movie (2022)
I mostly liked the story, I didn't find problems that would have prevented me from enjoying Thor 4: Love and Thunder.
The message of the story
I'm not sure there's one, beyond the generic "be good, love is better than hate".
The structure of the story
The scenes of the Thor: Love and Thunder film are mostly played in sequence, following the same storyline. There are many interludes when a narrator explains what happened in the previous movies. There are also flashbacks to previous events.
There's no single viewpoint character.
It has the usual arc of the dramatic structure - introduction, action, resolution.
Fan-service
Scenes and elements from previous works:
The legend of Thor
- Thor gets two goats, who draw his ship (instead of his chariot). They were even used in the Marvel comics.
- Thor threatens to eat the goats. In the legend he actually ate them, then resurrected them with the Mjölnir.
Thor (2011)
- The events of how Thor and Jane Foster met are told in a flashback.
Thor 3: Ragnarok (2017)
- There's a stage play showing previous events, just like in Ragnarok.
- The events of how Thor lost his father and then the Mjölnir are shown in a stage play.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
- There's an ice cream shop called Infinity Conez.
Guns & Roses
- The soundtrack consists of several Guns & Roses songs.
- The son of Heimdall uses the name Axl due to Axl Rose.
- There are Guns & Roses posters at New Asgard.
Sci-fi movies
- Event Horizont is referenced.
- Interstellar is referenced.
- I'm not entirely sure, but I think Jane was wearing a chestbursted Kane costume at the Halloween party.
Old memes
The screaming goat was a popular meme in 2008, some people think that was what inspired the screaming goats of this movie.
Things I liked
- I liked the look of the Shadow Realm.
- I liked the battle on the small planetoid. It was fun to see they look around the whole place.
Problematic elements
Sudden change of heart: For me, the changes in Gorr were a little too sudden to be believable.
Infinity Conez: I don't think anyone in the MCU would think it's funny to make them remember the Snap, that lead to a worldwide catastrophe.
Jane Foster Thor: This is something I also didn't like in the original graphic novels. Mjölnir doesn't grant Thor his powers - it merely allows him to fight better and fly. When Odin had enough of Thor, he removed his powers, and after he was satisfied with Thor's punishment, he gave him his powers back. (Although Beta Ray Bill also got Thor's powers in the comics, I also find it going against the canon.) So, after Thor regained his powers, losing the Mjölnir is just losing part of his options from his repertoire. So, even if we consider that Jane Foster is a worthy person to wield the Mjölnir, she wouldn't become Thor, just a regular girl, who is able to fight well, and can fly, even though I'm almost sure that the lack of air and the velocity would kill her.
And truth to be told, Jane Foster doesn't really add anything to the story. In the beginning, Thor feels lonely, and lost his purpose. It could have required the addition of Jane to the plot if finding his purpose would have been bonding with Jane again to start a family together. But in the end, the purpose he finds is to raise the child created by Eternity. And Jane just dies.
The Mjölnir, as Jane's protector: That's a nice thing that Thor tasked his hammer to take care of the needs of his girlfriend. However, it seems that after the spell was cast, the Mjölnir didn't really do anything related to Jane, it was just sticking to Thor. Then, when it was broken by Hela, it was just laying in a cabinet in New Asgard, until Jane Foster showed up. Did the Mjölnir need some extra reminder? Then, when the Mjölnir started to take the protector role seriously, it started to take away Jane's life as it turned her into a genderswapped cosplay of Thor. If anything, it should have used its powers to heal her, and protect her from any outside dangers, instead of sucking the life our of her.
The wish-granting place: If several people (Asgardians, Olympians) had access to the place, why didn't they use it to grant them their wishes?
Stealing the Stormbreaker: It's a fun moment when they leave without the axe, as it takes a couple of seconds for the viewer to remember that Thor was able to summon the Mjölnir through dimensions, and the Stormbreaker is an upgraded version that's even able to use the Bifröst. So, this could have been a fun twist, but somehow the axe stays with the Godbutcher, that goes against previous canon.
Bringing the children: Why did the Godbutcher bring all the children to the wish-granting place? Why didn't he leave them at the Shadow Realm? And, especially, why didn't he leave them dead, at least the Asgardians? He wanted to kill all gods, and the kids were godlings. He should have got rid of them while it was easier.
Jane getting into Valhalla: If the rules told by Thor are true, Jane didn't die during combat, she just died after it - like Sif would have had if Thor didn't save her. So, she would just go to Hel, unless it was also destroyed when Hela died.
The personality of Thor: The first movie starts with Thor being an unresponsible hothead, who prefers to have fun instead of being responsible. The whole point of the first movie was that Thor had to change in order to get his place back. However, Love and Thunder treats Thor as if none changes have happened to the character, unmaking the progressions in his personality. Thor is back to his reckless, fun-loving, short-sighted self. This movie might have worked better if it was set in the past of the first Thor movie.
Unnecessary characters: Most of the characters in the story don't do anything that would affect the plot.
- Korg: He doesn't even do a single thing, he's just constantly there in the background. If he would be cut from the movie, no one would notice his absence.
- Valkyre: While she at least do some things, she basically tags along only, so she could be a part of the story. Instead of staying with her people and leading them, like a responsible queen. Still, the events would fold out the same without her.
- Jane Foster: Her whole storyline becomes secondary, compared to the threat the Godbutcher poses. She also affects Thor's decision about the Godbutcher, but the same decision could have been reached by Thor by simply being a good person - like he was in the previous movies. So, Jane could also go from the story, and the plot would mostly remain the same.
Unanswered questions
- Why does the door to Eternity open even though Stormbreaker was taken away?
- Did Gorr get into some kind of afterlife?
* * *
Possibilities of improvement
- Cut the intro scene. It is later told again anyway, and it's not a really believable scene anyway.
How it could have been better?
Leave Jane Foster out of the story. Focus on only the Godbutcher. Valkyre could have done any of her deeds, beating Gorr in the settlement, saving Thor from Gorr. Jane just wasn't required for the plot. Valkyre could have even died at the end (although that would just mean for her being reborn at Valhalla).
* * *
How does it compare to the other works of the creators?
From the writer / director (Taika Waititi), I've seen What We Do in the Shadows (2014) and Jojo Rabbit (2019), both of them were great movies. I've also seen Thor 3: Ragnarok (2017), that he only directed, and that was also good.
I haven't seen any other works of the co-writer (Jennifer Kaytin Robinson), but Thor: Love and Thunder was okay.
How does it compare to the original source?
The Godbutcher plot-line has some similar beats.
- Gorr is a believer, but after some hardship, he becomes a hater of gods.
- Gorr finds a weapon that allows him to kill gods. He starts killing gods.
- Thor finds out about the gods killed by Gorr.
- Thor fights with Gorr, but Gorr escapes when Thor beats him.
- Thor visits Omnipotent City.
- Thor uses a flying ship to get to his destination.
- The child of Gorr is resurrected.
Differences:
- There's no time-travel involved.
- Gorr wants to go back in time to prevent the creation of the gods, or just use a bomb to destroy all the gods.
- There are three Thors from different timelines banding together. Somewhat like the Eternal Champions of Moorcock.
- Thor beheads Gorr in the end.
- The child of Gorr was resurrected by Gorr himself, he didn't need outside assistance.
The Jane Foster plot-line also has some similarities:
- Thor loses the Mjölnir, he can't use it any more.
- Jane Foster goes there, grabs the Mjölnir, and becomes a female Thor.
- An Asgardian loses an arm in a battle. It's Thor against Malekith in the comics, while Sif against Gorr in the movie.
- Thor and Jane Foster meet on a battlefield.
- Jane has cancer, and using the Mjölnir negates the effects of the chemo-therapy.
- Jane dies in the hands of Thor, after defeating their enemy.
How does it compare to the other films in the series?
From the Thor series, I prefer Love and Thunder to both The Dark World and Ragnarok. The Dark World was just not interesting, and Ragnarok was slowed down by the constant references to the other parts of the MCU.
Compared to the other releases of the 4th Phase, it's similar to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) in being a fun, self-contained movie.

Behind the scenes
I've read that there was plenty of scenes cut out of the movie. I thank the editor, who restrained himself from bloating this film.

Liberate the building: Enemies have taken an important building, and they are now the defenders. The attackers are tasked with liberating the building, while making sure nothing gets damaged. The attacker sets up the playing area, including a building in the middle. Every area of the building gets a numbered marker. Then the defenders may add obstacles, barricades and fortifications to the building. Then the defender sets up their models in a separate place, writing down in which location they are. Then the attacker deploys their models on the edges of the playing area. Every turn there's close combat or firefight in an area, it gets one damage. If 10 damage is accumulated, then every important thing is destroyed in that location. The defender can reveal their models in the location when they want to attack. If the attacker enters that location, they are also revealed. The attacker wins if they defeat the defenders, while more than half of the locations are still intact. The defender wins if they repel the attackers. It's a minor victory for the defender if they escape with more than half of their models.
Free the prisoners: The defender has captured some members of the attackers. The defender sets up the playing area, including a prison where the captives are kept. The defender sets up their models, then the attacker deploys their models on any of the edges of the playing area. The prisoners have very low combat statistics. The attackers have a leader who is able to arm / empower the captives when they are in base contact, allowing them to have a fighting chance against the defender guards. It's a major victory for the attacker if they rescue all the prisoners and defeat the leader of the defenders. It's a minor victory if they only rescue the prisoners.
Battle on the planetoid: Set up a round or ellipsoid playing area. Leaving at one side means entering from the opposite side, except at the poles.
Break in: The defender sets up the playing area, including a closed off area. Then the defender sets up their models, including a leader. Then the attacker enters the playing area at the edges of the playing area. The leader of the defenders has a key that needs to be retrieved. If any attacker model wins a round of close combat against the defender leader, they can grab the key. If they defeat the defender leader, any model touching its base can take the key. The attacker leader can use the key to open the closed off area, and once the leader enters, their objective is completed. The defender wins if they can prevent the attackers from entering the closed area. The attacker wins if their leader can enter the closed area.
Slow to open: It takes multiple turns to open the closed area. Once the key is used, roll a d6 at the beginning of every turn. On a roll of 1, the area opens. The leader can leave the key at the gate, it opens by itself. However, any model coming into base contact with the gate can take the key, stopping the opening.
Requires action to open: The leader is occupied while the opening takes place. If the leader takes any other action, they can't roll for opening in the beginning of the next turn.
Miniatures - 1/50-1/60 (28-32mm scale)
Civilians: Human-sized (S3) modern (advanced) human female / male civilian.
Gorr: Human-sized (S3) archaic warrior with a two-handed sword.
Thor: Human-sized (S3) archaic / fantasy warrior with an axe.
Giant goats: Large goats.
