This is my review of The Midas Touch, a contemporary fantasy drama movie from 2020. It's about a guy getting the magical power to seduce women with a touch. The The Midas Touch film is boring in its current form, I don't recommend it to anyone.

Review (spoiler-free) - The Midas Touch, movie (2020)

I didn’t know anything about this movie before I ran into it. The premise sounded interesting, so I watched The Midas Touch, without reading reviews or watching the trailer.

The The Midas Touch movie is about a guy getting the magical power to seduce women with a touch.

The concept is interesting, even the twist is interesting, but the real story starts in the middle of the movie, and the creators don't really explore their own concepts. The pacing is consistently slow (and unfortunately, tedious). There are no character arcs. If you accept the premise, I didn’t find major logical problems. Although it’s not a comedy, there are some humorous moments.

There were multiple scenes that were good, interesting, or funny, but those were buried under a lot of dull scenes that didn't seem to end.

The cinematography is okay. The sets, especially the historical ones, look interesting visually. The movie seems to be designed for wide screen.

The characters are mostly basic stereotypes, we don't really get to know them well. The actors are okay.

The music (by Tilman Borck) is very good. It's fun, playful, and it fits the movie fine.

There are scenes with nudity, and one scene with violence and gore.

The Midas Touch is a contemporary fantasy drama, that I think only the most dedicated fans of the genre could enjoy.

My experience

I wasn’t satisfied with The Midas Touch (2020).

Rating: Bad (1 out of 3 points). The Midas Touch is a weak film.

Enjoyment: Bad (1 out of 3 points). Despite some good scenes, The Midas Touch couldn't engage me.

Rewatchability: High. If you liked it for the first time, I think you found something in it, that will allow you to enjoy multiple watchings.

Chance of watching it again: No. It was hard enough for me to watch it once. I’d probably watch it if it were edited down to it’s interesting core.

Chance of watching a sequel: Good question. Based on the finished product, I'd say I wouldn't want to watch a sequel, but based on the concepts of the creator, I'm interested in where would they go with a similar story.

Will you enjoy this?

If you like to see naked people in mostly non-erotic, sometimes slightly erotic circumstances, you might like this, but then be prepared to skip between the nude scenes.

If you are aroused by the idea of females raping males, you might find some great scenes to sate your needs.

If you like horror or action thriller movies, you might like the film, although there are not many action scenes or scary scenes in the The Midas Touch movie.

If you like comedy in your movies, you'll probably enjoy the The Midas Touch film.

If you can get through the first half hour of the movie still interested, the rest of the movie will be something similar.

If you don't mind illogical elements in your movies, you can enjoy this.

If you prefer visuals over story, you’ll probably be bored.

If you hate comedy movies, I still think The Midas Touch is safe to watch, despite the comedic elements.

Watching for plot points

If you are interested in contemporary fantasy or super-hero stories, I think it's worth watching the The Midas Touch movie for the plot points.

Should you watch this on your own screen at home, or is it worth going to the cinema?

I think you’d get a similar experience either way.

Review with spoilers - The Midas Touch, movie (2020)

I didn’t like the The Midas Touch movie.

Cover

The cover of the movie is great, although it doesn't really give any idea what the movie is about.

Nonetheless, I admire its artistic beauty.

The trailer

The official trailer is basically a substitute for watching the movie.

If you prefer spoilers, it's a great trailer for the The Midas Touch film. If you prefer to avoid spoilers, it will ruin the movie for you.

Promise of the first scene

We see a guy having erotic dreams about a girl, and also about some Middle-Eastern guys. The guy wakes up, but decides to get back to bed until the alarm clock rings. I have no clue where would they take the story, but it shows that the guy is lazy, so maybe he has to overcome this by the end of the movie. Also, the fact that during his erotic dreams he also sees guys, opens up a lot more possibilities than more closed minded movies.

Execution: Yeah, well, the guy didn't overcome anything, and he only had sex with women. So, I'm not sure about the fulfilment of the promise.

Plot summary / Synopsis

There's a man (Gino Wilson as Felix Blythe), who is not very successful with women. He wants to get access to women to sate his sexual desires, but he is too lazy to try to improve himself to be able to do so. He meets a man in a bar who is able to seduce women with a mere touch. He is able to transfer his power to the protagonist.

From then on, every woman he touches gets aroused by him, and most of the time they try to have sex with him. After a very tiring day, he starts to understand that he should use this power more intelligently.

In parallel stories, we see the introductions and stories of the bad guys: his boss (Clayton Nemrow as Ron, the Boss), a politician (Nicolas Buitrago as James Walker) and a scheming guy (Tilman Borck as Sviatoslav Rau), who has a henchman (Bernhard Bozian as Sidekick). There's also the wife of the politician (Noémi Domokos as Sarah), who runs a female BDSM cult.

His boss finds out he has this power, and tries to use it to be able to force women easier to have sex with him. He traps the protagonist, with only his hand reaching out of a box. He pushes women onto his hand to get aroused, then he uses this to reach his own goals.

Others also get to know about this. When they learn that the power is transferable, they force the protagonist to give it to them. As the power was transferred to a very bad person (instead of the slightly bad person the protagonist is), the effect is changed, and instead of sexual arousal, it raises cannibalistic desires in women. In the last scene we see that multiple women eat the bad guy.

The setting

The Midas Touch is set in a contemporary fantasy Earth, where magic works.

The Midas Touch

The owner is able to seduce women with a mere touch. He is able to transfer this power to others if they ask for it.

If it get transferred to a very bad person, instead of sexual arousal, it raises cannibalistic desires in women.

Then the power probably ends, as the very bad person that gets eaten, probably can’t transfer it to anyone.

Analysis of the story - The Midas Touch, movie (2020)

Although I didn’t like the story, there were no major specific problems that would have prevented me from enjoying The Midas Touch, beyond the bad writing and acting.

The message of the story

"Don’t accept magical gifts”? "Getting your wish come true could be dangerous"?

The structure of the story

The scenes of the The Midas Touch film are mostly played in sequence, following the same storyline. There are some flashbacks to the ancient past.

There's no single viewpoint character.

While it has the usual arc of the dramatic structure, but the introduction is overly long, it lasts for about the half of the movie, then the story continues with the action, then resolution.

Things I liked

  • I liked that people wanted to use the power of the protagonist to their own ends. I think this is a natural desire that is not really explored in most superhero stories.
  • I liked the scene when the politician finds that his wedding ring slipped from his finger. Luckily, he remembers where it could have happened, so he goes to the bedroom of his assistant girl, who is in a bed with his business partner. The business partner is still inserted while they sleep, but to his luck, the politician finds out that he entered in the back door, making his search easier, so he can reach inside unobstructed to fish out his wedding ring. And just after he leaves, the girl wakes up, and tells the business partner about her dream, where she felt that she had lost the only chance to retain a wedding ring. These two things, basically in the same scene, was probably the best part of the whole movie.
  • The music was great.
  • The choice of actors was good. They fit the characters fine, and they looked distinct enough.
  • I especially liked the character of Sviatoslav Rau. I'd love to see more stories about his schemes.

Problematic elements

The title: The touch of King Midas turned things into gold. In this story, there's nothing like that. Also, the title "The Midas Touch" was used for multiple stories before, making it confusing to refer to this specific story.

Long introduction: The beginning is overly long with a lot of unnecessary introduction scenes. After half an hour, I was worried that I'm watching the wrong film, so I checked the program to make sure. In the meantime I was so bored, that I've started to do searches about the actors that appeared in the film. The story should start a lot more earlier - preferably right at the beginning.

Unanswered questions

  • How are the women handling the fact that they were forced by magic to feel the urge to rape a man?
  • How will the women in the end live with the fact that they were forced by magic to eat another person?

Possibilities of improvement

  • After introducing the main protagonist in his workplace, most of the movie should be cut, until the scene where he gets his powers. After that, the pacing starts to work better.

How it could have been better?

* * *

How does it compare to the other works of the creators?

This is the first (and currently only) feature film of the writer / director (Tilman Borck).

Uses for the film - The Midas Touch, movie (2020)

Plot

  • Set on contemporary fantasy Earth.
  • A man gets a magical power that allows him extraordinary things, but it comes with a price.
  • There’s a magical power that can be transferred to others, if they ask for it.
  • People get aware that there’s a guy with magical powers, and they want to use him for their own needs.

Scenes

  • The scenes when the protagonist enchants women with his touch could be used to depict the workings of a charm spell.
  • The final scene with the cannibalistic women could be used to depict cultists / ghouls eating a victim.

Designs

Scenario ideas - Role-playing game scenario ideas

  • One of the characters receive the ability to activate a magical effect on anyone (or a selected sex, race, age group) every time they touch. I'd probably make this usable for a couple of times a day for game balance, or have some adverse effect on the character every time the power gets used, even if it's temporary.
  • An acquaintance of the players receive the ability above. The players could get the recipient of the power to help them out in their goals, for a price.

Scenario ideas - Wargame scenario ideas

Transferable ability: One of the models have a special ability. As long as the model is alive, it can transfer the special ability to another model it touches. If it wants to give to ability to an enemy model, it has to make a successful close combat attack.

Hindering ability: The special ability has a negative effect on the model. For example, it gives a negative modifier on ranged attacks in a radius.

Curse: One of the models has a curse that compels a special unit type to attack the model when they get in a specific distance. When they get into that distance, those models who belong to that specific unit type need to roll for skill or Morale if they don’t want to attack. This also works on their own units, so the player should keep those units at a distance from the cursed model.

Miniatures - 1/50-1/60 (28-32mm scale)

Civilians: Human-sized (S3) modern (advanced) human female / male civilian.
