This is my review of The Matrix Resurrections, a futuristic action movie for The Matrix series from 2021. It's about a man finding out that the reality is not what he thought it was. The The Matrix Resurrections film is a watchable, but unnecessary sequel, that I only recommend to dedicated fans of the series.

I knew they were going to make this movie, although I can't say I eagerly waited it. When it was released, I wanted to watch it before the story gets spoiled by the media. I've seen the trailer.
The The Matrix Resurrections movie is about a man finding out that the reality is not what he thought it was.
The story has interesting aspects, but overall, it's not good. The mood is inconsistent, sometimes it's a serious action flick, other times it's full of meta-elements, turning the story into it's own parody. There were no real character arcs. I didn't find major logical problems in the plot itself, I just didn't like many of the dramatic choices of the creators.
If you haven't seen the Matrix movies yet, you'll probably don't understand a lot of things. However, if you've already seen them, you'll be bored by the rehashed scenes.
The cinematography is good. The sets and scenes are interesting visually. The action scenes looked cool, but they were hard to follow, I was not always sure what is happening.
The characters, although there are not that many, are not really introduced. We don't really get to know them by the end. The actors are okay.
The music (by Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer) is not memorable, but it fits the scenes.
The Matrix Resurrections is a watchable futuristic action movie, that I think fans of The Matrix and the genre might enjoy.
My experience
I was not satisfied with The Matrix Resurrections (2021). I was bored after the first 30 minutes.
Rating: Average (2 out of 3 points). The Matrix Resurrections looks good, but lacks a good story.
Enjoyment: Weak (2- out of 3 points). The Matrix Resurrections felt boring and pointless.
Rewatchability: Average. I think it's mostly the surprise of the story that makes you feel interested, especially for the first 30 minutes of the movie. As the characters are not very compelling, I assume it's the action scenes that will make you enjoy watching the movie multiple times.
Chance of watching it again: Nope. Once was more than enough.
Chance of watching a sequel: Yeah, I know I'll probably watch it, but I might hate myself for doing so.

Review with spoilers - The Matrix Resurrections, movie (2021)
I didn't like the The Matrix Resurrections movie. Watching Keanu Reeves staggering wearily through scenes was a similar experience to Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020). Even the moves of him reminded me of Keanu playing Ted from the early Bill & Ted movies.

The trailer is basically a substitute for watching the movie.
If you prefer spoilers, it's a great trailer for the The Matrix Resurrections film. If you prefer to avoid spoilers, it might ruin the movie for you. Although I have to admit, that you could probably watch this trailer, especially if you've seen The Matrix, as the beats are practically the same.
Promise of the first scene
A team of hackers try to hack a system, but they get into a trap? Or something like that. I have no clue where would this lead.
In the second scene, we see that a team of commandos find a girl, who is probably one of the hackers. I assume that she'll escape, that will lead us to meet the rest of the team, so the adventure can begin, or she'll get captured, and the others will try to rescue her, starting the action.
Execution: Nope, we don't see her any more in the movie. Although they have to rescue a girl, but she's not this one.
Plot summary / Synopsis
A Resistance team, including a girl (Jessica Henwick as Bugs) and the projection of a man (Toby Onwumere as Sequoia), finds an old code in the Matrix, running in a loop. They watch it from a distance, as a police commando team tries to apprehend a woman (Trinity), but she beats them. The girl gets attacked by agents, but she gets rescued by one of the agents (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Agent Smith / Morpheus), who takes her into a secret location. The place is actually the old home of Neo. The agent says that he is actually Morpheus, and he has to find Neo. The girl offers him the red pill. They then go to a building, and jump out of a windows, so they can exit.
We see Neo (Keanu Reeves as Thomas Anderson / Neo), among The Matrix memorabilia, working for a gaming company (Deus Ex Machina). He made computer games out of the Matrix trilogy, and got famous with it. He meets a Trinity-lookalike (Carrie-Anne Moss as Tiffany / Trinity) in a restaurant. His boss (Jonathan Groff as Smith / Agent Smith) talks to him about their owners, the Warner Brothers are going to make a sequel to the Matrix trilogy. This stresses Neo, and he starts having visions of the Matrix. He goes to his psychiatrist (Neil Patrick Harris as the Analyst), who prescribes him medicine, blue pills. In a reflection we see that Neo looks differently from how he sees himself. After a while, he stops taking the medicine.
The creative team of the gaming company comes up with buzz words for the new game, and they analyse what made the trilogy stand out.
Neo talks with the Trinity-lookalike, and in a reflection we see that she looks differently from how Neo sees her. Her different look is confirmed when she gets laughed at, after asking her husband if he finds any similarities between her and the Trinity character from The Matrix trilogy.
The new Morpheus visits Neo in his workplace, and offers him a red pill. He refuses it, but then police commandos attack him and Morpheus. His boss grabs a gun, and also starts to shoot at them.
Neo finds himself at the psychiatrist, talking about these events. Then he tries to jump from a building, to test if he could fly, but he's rescued by the girl. The girl opens a door that leads to a train in Tokyo. They get from the train to a theatre, where The Matrix is played. There they explain to him that it took them 60 years to find Neo, after he went to the machine city with Trinity, and disappeared. Neo takes the red pill, but they are found by agents. They get back to the train, but the passengers are infected by a program, and they attack Neo. Neo gets pushed through a mirror.
Neo awakes in a pod in the machine city. He sees Trinity in a pod, as he gets carried away by a robot. Neo's body is in bade shape, but while the doctors try to save him, Morpheus takes him to a virtual training ground, and starts to fight him, taunting him. This leads to Neo losing control, and destroying the virtual place. When he wakes up on a hovercraft (Mnemosyne), they tell him that the world got a better place due to him. Now, there are machines that fight on the human's side. They also introduce him to the Morpheus program, who can get a virtual body in the real world, using nano-machines.
They go to a large human settlement (Io). There, Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe) welcomes Neo. Neo wants to rescue Trinity, but Niobe doesn't allow this, as it would endanger their city. However, Neo leaves with Morpheus and the girl, to save Trinity. They find Trinity in the Matrix, so they enter. They meet Agent Smith, and other rogue programs (The Exiles, including Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian), who all want to kill Neo. He fights with Agent Smith, and uses his special powers to defeat him. Then, when Neo finds Trinity, the psychiatrist steps in, and pauses the time. He tells Neo that they really died in the machine city, but they decided to resurrect them, recreating the missing parts of their bodies. Neo is offered a choice - he can join Trinity in the pod, or Trinity will be killed.
Niobe decides to sends her men to save Trinity. Neo offers that he wants to speak to Trinity, and if Trinity chooses the Matrix, then he'll join her. After some arguing, Trinity chooses to get out, and hell breaks loose. The psychiatrist stops the time, but Agent Smith takes him out, so the fighting can start. They defeat the agents, but the psychiatrist starts a program that turns every human into a puppet to attack them. They escape from the horde of people. They Trinity and Neo jump from a building, and Trinity is able to fly. Then suddenly, they get out of the Matrix, and reunite in real life.
Neo and Trinity goes back to the Matrix, to deal with the psychiatrist. They threaten him, and tell him that they'll make some changes to the Matrix.
They then fly away.
The setting

Intelligent machines rule the world. Humanity is hiding in small settlements.
After Neo saved Zion, the machines left. Then, due to the shortage of power, the machines turned against each other. Some of the machines now work with the humans.
Zion got either destroyed or abandoned in the past 60 years.
The Machines resurrected Neo and Trinity, and kept them close, but didn't allow them to touch each other. According the WikiPedia, this was done because the Machines noticed that regular humans produce more power this way, but if they touch, they overpower the system.

The Matrix
The Resistance can use mirrors to enter or exit the Matrix, or to teleport to other parts of it. Or they can sometimes use doors. Sometimes they just jump out of windows to exit.
The Machines can now use "swarm mode", that makes every human in the vicinity of activation zombie-like, attacking the designated target, regardless of any danger.

I'm not sure there's one.
The structure of the story
The scenes of the The Matrix Resurrections film are mostly played in sequence, following the same storyline. There are some plenty of flashback scenes, and there's even a projection of the first Matrix movie in the background for a while.
There is no single viewpoint character.
It has mostly the usual arc of the dramatic structure - introduction, action (making the sequel), switch, action (fighting the Matrix), a kind of resolution, without closure, open to a sequel.

Bugs: The female captain of the hovercraft Mnemosyne. She found and rescued Neo from the pod of the Machines.
The Analyst: A program, that currently rules the Matrix. It acted as the psychiatrist of Neo in the Matrix. It can slow the time around himself in the Matrix.
Changes to characters
Agent Smith: He was the boss of Neo in the Matrix. Then he went rogue, and wants to be independent.
Morpheus: He got mixed up with an Agent Smith program? This version of Morpheus dresses like a pimp while in the Matrix. He is able to manifest himself in the real world through technology.
Niobe: She is now the leader of the human settlement.
Thomas Anderson / Neo: He was resurrected by the machines, and his aging was slowed. In the Matrix, he was a computer programmer, working on games based on The Matrix. He got freed from the Matrix by Bugs and her crew.
Trinity: She was resurrected by the machines, and her aging was slowed. In the Matrix, she was a housewife, with multiple kids. She got freed by Neo from the machines.

How does it compare to the other works of the creators?
From the writer (Lana Wachowski), I've watched some movies. The Matrix (1999) was not great, but it was interesting. The Matrix Reloaded (2003), The Matrix Revolutions (2003), Cloud Atlas (2012) and Jupiter Ascending (2015) were all mediocre. V for Vendetta (2005) was the only exception that was good, but it might be because it was an adaptation, and the source material was good.
From the writer (David Mitchell), I've seen Cloud Atlas (2012), that was mediocre. This wasn't good either, so I can't say I'm waiting for his future works.
From the writer (Aleksandar Hemon), this is the first film I've seen.
From the director (Lana Wachowski), I've seen some movies. The Matrix (1999) was not great, but it was interesting. The Matrix Reloaded (2003), The Matrix Revolutions (2003), Cloud Atlas (2012) and Jupiter Ascending (2015) were all mediocre. It seems to me that she is not improving.
How does it compare to the other films in the series?
At the moment I feel that this is the weakest, most pointless installment of the The Matrix series, but it's been a while since I've seen the previous two. And I gave a slightly worse rating for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, so it might turn out that The Matrix Resurrections is the second best episode after the first The Matrix.

Analysis of the story - The Matrix Resurrections, movie (2021)
The story itself was not bad, but that was not enough for me to enjoy The Matrix Resurrections. The whole movie felt like it was written by beginners, who don't know how to use the dramatic tools.
Problematic elements
No introductions: In the first Matrix, we got the characters and the rules for the Matrix established. So, we knew who do we see, and what to predict, when we see something unusual happening. This movie doesn't offer the rules of the Matrix, so we can't tell what to expect.
Length: The movie is too long for the story inside. There are many scenes that could have been cropped, combined or entirely left out, without any change to the actual plot.
Not taking advantage of the build up: The film starts with some fun brain-storming scenes about creating a sequel to the Matrix trilogy. They come up with buzzwords, and try to update the story to the 2020s. It would have been fun to see all of these ideas implemented in the actual story, but after the switch to the Matrix, we just got a repeat of the original Matrix movie, without any of these proposed changes.
The first scenes: In the beginning, we see a woman get attacked by agents. We don't see her any more. We also see a girl getting attacked, and while she does appear in the story later, it's not her story. It would have been better to begin the film closer to the start of the story, that's probably the scene when we see Neo for the first time.
Swarm mode: The Machines are keeping the humans, because they need them for energy. The human avatars that are turned into zombies will probably die, causing the dead of the human host (unless they are detached from the Matrix before that, but if it works like that, then why use the swarm in the first place?). It would make it very hard for the Machines to convince the populace that it's just some stressed people breaking down... It would be a lot more efficient to spawn some unsophisticated programs, that would just attack the targets, then disappear.
The last battle scene: The problem with that was that was not an ounce of tension in the action, and the action itself didn't look good. If we had been stressed enough that every single person jumping off the roof means that a real human dies in a pod, it would have given in some emotion, but it didn't seem like Neo cared even a little about their well being. He just pushed them away like some nuisance he had to deal with.
Pointless fan service: I don't mind fan service as long as it doesn't hurt the story. However, here I feel that the fan service elements worked against the movie:
- Repeating the beginning of the first film: Reminding us that The Matrix was good, and a better movie than this is not helping.
- Morpheus program: Why do we need Morpheus at all? If there needs to be a Morpheus figure, why does it have to be a copy of Morpheus, instead of an original character?
- The Merovingian: Why does the Merovingian need to be in the movie? And if he does, why does he look like that?
Unanswered questions
- Why did Bugs decide to free Neo? Isn't that like an act of war on their part?
- What was the purpose of this movie?

How it could have been better?
Focus on the meta-elements of the story. The beginning was interesting, seeing how they were analysing The Matrix series, and how they wanted to update it. It would have been cool to see a Matrix updated to 2020s needs.

The creators said they wanted to subvert the current meaning of the "taking the red pill", as something that means "finding out that the world is ruled by liberals". I didn't feel that they achieved this particularly well.

Stealing from the storage facility: The defender has multiple precious objects they want to keep. The attacker sends an elite team to steal one of those. The defender sets up the playing area, including 6 numbered safes that contain objects. The defender sets up their forces anywhere on the playing area. The attacker rolls a d6 to determine which object they want to steal, but they keep this roll hidden from the attacker - they cover the dice, or write down the result on a hidden paper. When the attacker reaches the safe, they reveal the number. They then have to spend an action to open the locks. Then can then take the object, and they have to leave the playing area with the stolen object. The attacker wins if they leave with the object, while more than half of their force is still alive. The defender wins if they don't let the attacker take the object. It's a draw if the attacker takes the object, but more than half of their units is killed.
Hidden target v1 (harder for the attacker): The attacker doesn't know the contents of the safes. The numbers pot on the safes are turned down. When the team reaches the safe, they can reveal the number. If the number matches the attacker's target, the attacker reveals it to the defender, and opens the lock.
Hidden target v2 (harder for the attacker): There are no set numbers beside the safes. When the attacker reaches a safe, roll a d6. On a roll of 1, it's the safe they want to open. If they reach the last safe on the playing area, there's no need for rolling, it's the one they want to open.
Hidden target with identical safes (harder for the attacker): The attacker can't know if they are at the right safe, until they spend an action to open it. Then they'll either open it, or find it out that they can't.
Finding the keys v1 (harder for the attacker): The attacker needs to know the secret method (codeword, special key) how to open the locks on the object. The attacker starts without this knowledge, but at the beginning of every turn, they roll a d6. On a roll of 1, they've found the secret, and they can open the object to get the contents.
Finding the keys v2 (harder for the attacker): The attacker has to obtain the keys. Before the game, the defender deploys 6 tokens on the playing area, upside down. One of them has a key sign on its face. When the attacker touches one of these tokens, it can be turned face up. If it's the key, it can be taken by the model. Otherwise, discard the token (or turn it face down again for some extra memory games).
Specialist units (harder for the attacker): Only a special kind of unit can open the safe.
Inside agents (easier for the attacker): The attacker has some double agents. The attacker can deploy the double agents at the edge of the playing area at the beginning of the game. The double agent can act freely, until they try to open a safe or attack a defender. When that happens, the defender can treat them as enemies. Use a different kind of model for the double agents, so you won't confuse them with either the attackers or the defenders.
There and back again: Prepare two playing areas. The first playing area is set up by the attacker. Then the attacker deploys 6 tokens on each playing area, that must be at least 10 cms apart from each other and the edge of the playing area. The second playing area is set up by the defender. Then the defender deploys 6 tokens on each playing area, that must be at least 10 cms apart from each other and the edge of the playing area. Then the attacker puts an objective anywhere on the second playing area, that must be at least 10 cms apart from the tokens and the edge of the playing area. The defender units are deployed in the middle third of the first playing area. The attackers are deployed in the middle half, outside of the middle third. If an attacker model reaches a token, it can open it as a portal, that's open for one turn. On that turn, attacker and defender units can move through it. The model that opens the portal, designates the token on the second playing area, where the portal opens. After the first defender model reaches the next playing area, any attacker models can be removed from the playing area, and deployed at the edge of the next playing area. A defender model must reach the objective, achieving the objective, then the defenders can move to a portal token, and leave the game. The defender wins if they achieve the objective, while more than half of their units survive. The attacker wins, if they kill all of the defender units, while more than half of their units survive.
Multiple playing areas (harder for the defender): There are further playing areas set up after the objective is reached on the second playing area. The defender models can always choose a portal token on the previous or the next playing area, when they move through the portals. All of the objectives must be gathered for the defender to win the game.
Non-linear path (harder for the defender): The objectives must be achieved in a specific order. Come up with a way to randomise their order, the defender does this secretly, writing down the order, revealing them to the attacker as they are achieved. After achieving an objective, the next one can be achieved on the next turn, or later.
Random achievement time (harder for the defender): When a defender model reaches the objective, roll a d6. That many turns must be spent with achieving the objective.
Random achievement time with teamwork (easier for the defender): The d6 roll shows how much work must be done. Every defender model touching the objective for a turn decreases this number.
Random inhabitants (harder for the defender): The second and further playing areas might be inhabited by intelligent locals or wild creatures. When the first defender model reaches a playing area level, the attacker chooses an inhabitant, and randomly deploys some on the playing area. Come up with ways to randomise their actions. Civilians will probably run away from the fight, warriors will probably attack the intruders. The difficulty level is set by the attacker, but the same warriors that attack the defender units, will also attack the attacker units, if they enter the playing area.
