Review (spoiler-free) - The Batman, movie (2022)
I knew that a new Batman movie is coming, as it has been advertised for years. When it actually came out, it still caught me by surprise. I tried to watch it as soon as possible, before the media outlets would fill the internet with spoilers. I've watched the trailer, I've read several Batman comics, and I've seen most of the Batman movies.
The The Batman movie is about a vigilante trying to stop a killer who targets important people.
The basic concept of the story is okay, although the execution is lacklustre. The pacing is consistent. There's a semblance of character arcs, but the changes are just happening, instead of getting built up. There are minor logical problems.
The cinematography is okay. It's not interesting visually, they go for the "grim & gritty" dark style, so every place looks the same. The action scenes are okay, they are not over the top, you can follow what's happening. The special effects are good, the CGI seamlessly blends into the movie.
We don't really get to know the characters. Also, most of the characters are unlikeable psychopaths. The background we get would be okay in an action movie. However, because of the investigations, but we should know more about them, to give us insight into the setting. Also, as it's a thriller, we'd need to know them better, so we'd care for their fates. The actors are good.
The music (by Michael Giacchino) is okay, it fits the story, but it's not interesting.
I feel that this movie is for people who have already seen previous Batman movies. There's a lack of introductions, but there are plenty of references.
However, compared to the previous adaptations, I feel that both Batman (1989) or Batman Begins (2005) is a better movie. The Batman (2022) is closer to the Batman trilogy from Christopher Nolan, but less interesting.
The Batman is a watchable futuristic / fantasy crime thriller, that I think only dedicated fans of the Batman would really enjoy.
My experience
I was not satisfied with The Batman (2022). I prefer stories with well-thought, interesting plots, and The Batman couldn't deliver that.
Rating: Average (2 out of 3 points). The Batman is a watchable film.
Enjoyment: Average (2 out of 3 points). The Batman felt too long for me.
Rewatchability: Low. I think it's mostly the surprise of the story that makes you feel interested, as the characters and the story is not very interesting.
Chance of watching it again: No. I wouldn't want to sit through this again.
Chance of watching a sequel: I know I'll probably watch it, because it's Batman, and I always hope for the best.

Will you enjoy this?
If you like mystery or thriller movies, you might like The Batman.
If you like vigilante vengeance movies, you might like The Batman.
If you like action thriller movies, you might like the film, although there are not many action scenes in the The Batman movie.
If you like crime investigation stories, you might like The Batman, although it's not a typical investigation story.
If you enjoyed the Batman Begins (2005), you might be interested in this story, although it's not as good.
If you prefer visuals over story, there are some nice scenes in the film, but you'll have to wait long stretches of time between them.
If you hate depiction of drug use, be prepared, as there are some scenes where people take drugs, but it's not the focus of the movie.
If you hate depiction of violence, you should probably skip this movie.
Do you need to read the original graphic novels to enjoy this?
There's enough explanation that you'll understand what's going on without reading the original graphic novels.
Reading them before watching this movie is probably a disadvantage, as most of them have a better story than this movie, so this contrast will probably make you enjoy this film even less.
Do you need to see the previous Batman films to enjoy this?
There's enough explanation that you'll understand what's going on without seeing any other films.
However, watching Batman Begins (2005) would really add to the experience, as that establishes the Batman's character.
Do you need to see the second film to enjoy this?
As the sequel is in the works, I can't tell.
Watching for plot points
If you are interested in crime thriller or vigilante vengeance stories, it might be worth watching the The Batman movie for the plot points. But reading the summary is probably enough.
Should you watch this on your own screen at home, or is it worth going to the cinema?
The visuals probably look better if you watch it in cinema.

Review with spoilers - The Batman, movie (2022)
I didn't like the The Batman movie.
At two hours, I started to get bored, in the middle of a fight that was probably supposed to be intense, but I just saw that a guy plows through mooks, with no real stakes or urgency, making the action scene empty.
As a crime investigation story, it was strange and unsatisfying. There are usually two kinds of crime stories, and The Batman didn't fit either. In one, we first see the perpetrator, and during the investigation, the audience waits for the investigator to find out about the identity of the perpetrator. In the other, the audience is introduced to the facts and the possible perpetrators, and they can try to use their logic to find out the identity of the perpetrator with the investigators. In this movie, we didn't get to know the identity of the perpetrator, but we didn't even get introduced to the possibilities. So, it's the worst of both worlds - we just get to see the events unfold, without any chance of using our brains.
As I knew from the marketing that the Riddler will be played by Paul Dano, I unintentionally kept looking for him during the movie, but he wasn't anywhere. The first time we see him is when he is apprehended by the police. This made the marketing okay by not spoiling the story, but it made the investigation part kind of strange, by not showing the perpetrator earlier.
Cover
The cover of the movie is okay, it doesn't say much, but it doesn't spoil the movie.
The trailer
The trailer is good. It contains some spoilers, but it's interesting enough to make you want to watch the movie.
Promise of the first scene
We see some ninja murder a guy with a sword, but later it is revealed it was just pretending. I have no clue where will they take the story, but I assume there will be people pretending? Or killing others?
Execution: As there was no real promise, I was not satisfied with the execution.
Plot summary / Synopsis
The mayor of the city (Rupert Penry-Jones as Don Mitchell) is murdered by a masked killer (the Riddler).
We see people celebrating Halloween, and also acts of crime and violence on the streets. As a street gang attacks a man, the Batman, a vigilante arrives, and beats them up.
There's a police investigation about the murder of the mayor. A friendly police officer (Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon) invites the Batman. The killer left a letter and a coded text, addressed to the Batman. The police chief (Alex Ferns as Pete Savage) finds out about the Batman, and get him sent away before the press arrives.
The Batman goes home, gets out of his suit, and it turns out that he is a rich guy (Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne). He meets his butler (Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth), who knows he is a vigilante. The butler starts to decipher the coded text. It leads them to the car pool of the mayor, where they find a thumb-drive, with images about the mayor and a woman (Hana Hrzic as Annika Koslov), and a gangster (Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin).
The Batman goes to the gangster's club (Iceberg Lounge). They talk, but the gangster tells him that he doesn't know the woman. There's a girl (Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle) working for the gangster, who seems to recognise the woman on the photo. The Batman waits for the girl to leave, then he follows her. Luckily, the girl goes directly to the woman, as they live in the same flat. Then the girl puts up a Catwoman suit, and goes to the mayor's home to open the safe. The Batman confronts her, then she explains that she only wanted to get the woman's passport, as the mayor took it from her. They go back to the girl's flat, but the woman is not there. They turn on the TV, and they see that the masked killer has caught the police chief, and he threatens to kill him (his face will get eaten by rats). The girl tells the Batman that she had seen the police chief in the gangster's club.
The Batman goes to meet the friendly police officer, and they inspect the evidence together. The masked killer has left some photos that show the police chief dealing with a criminal, and a riddle for the Batman.
The Batman gives his contact lens cameras to the girl, so she can record the happenings in the gangster's club, as the Batman suspects that the masked killer is looking for victims there. He sees that there are plenty of important people in the club. The girl talks with an attorney (Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson), and it turns out that the mayor and the police chief were in some criminal plot together. There's also the mob boss (John Turturro as Carmine Falcone). After the attorney leaves, he is attacked by the masked killer.
The butler solves the coded riddle, that refers to a winged rat.
The rich guy goes to the funeral of the police chief, as he hopes that the masked killer will also show up. The mob boss and the gangster is also there. A car crashes into the scene. The attorney is there, with a bomb attached to him, and a phone in his hand, ringing for the Batman. The Batman arrives, and takes the call. The masked killer asks the attorney for the identity of his informer, promising to letting him free if he answers. The attorney rather dies than give the informer up, as he says that he'd be dead either way, but the informer would get his whole family killed in retaliation. The bomb explodes, killing the attorney, knocking out the Batman.
The police takes the Batman in custody, but they don't take his mask off. The friendly police officer lets him escape. They decide to investigate the gangster.
While they are watching the gangster, the girl arrives. Batman talks to her. She tries to steal from the gangster, but they find the dead body of the woman. The bad guys start to shoot at her and Batman. The gangster tries to get away in a car, but the Batman chases him in his own car, leading to mass destruction, and more than likely several injured or dead innocent people. The girl gets away. The Batman catches the gangster. As they talk to him, the gangster helps the Batman realise another clue to a riddle. He suspects that the masked killer is an orphan, who grew up in the orphanage. They go to the orphanage, where they find it out that the masked killer is probably after the rich guy, who is the son of a previous mayor candidate.
The butler opens a package, sent to the rich guy, and the package explodes. The butler survives, but he is taken to the hospital.
The girl calls the Batman. They meet. The girl tells the Batman that her mother told her that she was told that she is the daughter of the mob boss, but he never took notice of her, that's why she wanted to steal that money.
The masked killer leaves a message, implying that the family of the rich guy was also involved in shady practices with the mob boss. The rich guy visits the mob boss. He tells him that it's true, the father of the rich guy asked him to silence a nosy reporter, so he had that reporter killed. He also tells him that his father was killed by another mob boss because of this.
The rich guy visits the butler, who tells him that the father really asked for silencing the reporter, but he didn't want him killed. When he wanted to tell the police about this, he was killed that night.
The girl calls the Batman, as she has found a man who was responsible for the death of the woman. She also has a record that indicates that the mob boss was the killer of the woman. The man the girl captured tells them that most people in the city work for the mob boss, and they are using the fund that was established by the father of the rich guy. The girl goes to kill the mob boss. The Batman goes after her to prevent her killing the mob boss. The Batman captures the mob boss, but the masked killer kills him.
They capture the masked killer. It turns out he was an accountant (Paul Dano as Edward Nashton), who found out about the mob connection in the accounts. He talks to the Batman. He tells him that they were a good team in getting rid of the corrupt people. He had planned that they should take a shelter in the prison, while the big event wipes out the city. The Batman tries to look for clues, but he is too late, and bombs go off at the dam. The masked killer knew that the people will be sent to a shelter, where his followers are waiting with guns, to shoot everybody.
The Batman arrives just as they start shooting. He stops the bad guys. The girl also helps him. The Batman helps saving the people.
In the prison, the masked killer talks to another inmate (Barry Keoghan as the Joker).
The girl decides to leave the city, so she bids goodbye to the Batman.
The setting
The movie is set in a contemporary Earth, with fantasy / futuristic elements, probably in 2022.
There's been a renewal project, started by the Waynes 20 years ago, but there's still crime in the city, as the fund has been taken over by criminals after the death of Thomas Wayne.
In this universe biometric locks work even with dead body parts, unlike in real world.

The Batman
He has been working as a vigilante for two years by now.
He is not very wise, and not good in psychology.
He doesn't care about his corporation, he is focused on crime fighting.
He has some deal with the police, as they've let him install a Bat-signal. He is also called to some investigations.
The Batman suit:
- Body armour that allows him to be shot with a pistol from point blank distance, without Batman feeling it. Later he takes full-auto shots from sub-machine guns. He also takes automatic rifle shots from point blank. An explosion from point blank distance pushes him back, but it doesn't hurt him otherwise. The mask protected even his exposed face from getting burnt. A shotgun shot pushes him back a little. It also offers protection from crashing and falling damage.
- Built-in wingsuit, that allows him to glide.
- His suit is probably also insulated against electrocution.
Equipment:
- Grappling hook gun, that can lift him up.
- He has contact lenses with built-in camera, so he can rewatch the events.
- He has combat drugs with him that boost him during fights.
The Batmobile:
- It has a rocket booster. It allows it to jump into the air.
- It has bulletproof windshields.
- The car (and the tires) are probably also fireproof.
The message of the story
"Giving hope is sometimes better than taking revenge"?
The structure of the story
The scenes of the The Batman film are played in sequence, following the same storyline.
There's no single viewpoint character.

Things I liked
* * *
How does it compare to the other works of the creators?
I haven't seen any other works of the writer (Peter Craig), but this was a bad start.
From the writer (Matt Reeves), I've seen War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), that was good. This was not good.
From the director (Matt Reeves), I've seen Cloverfield (2008), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), that were all good. The direction might have been okay in this movie, but the story was lacking.
How does it compare to the original source?
The movie is not a direct adaptation of any original source, it just uses elements from Batman: The Long Halloween (1996-1997), and Batman: Dark Victory (19992-2000), with the message added from Batman: Ego (2000).
How does it compare to the other Batman films?
I still prefer the Batman (1989) and Batman Begins (2005) to this one. Both are interesting action movies, while The Batman is more of a crime investigation, but without the investigation seen.
The Batman (2022) is more down to Earth realistic, closer to the setting of the Batman Begins than the world of the Batman (1989). The Joker (2019) could also fit into the world, as that shows a Thomas Wayne that was far from perfect. However, this realistic approach makes it harder to believe the hyper-advanced technology that Batman uses.
If you want to watch a fun Batman movie, choose the ones that Tim Burton directed. If you want to watch a more realistic Batman, watch the ones that Chris Nolan directed. If you've seen them all, and still want to watch some Batman movie, only then it's the time to grab The Batman (2022).

Analysis of the story - The Batman, movie (2022)
I didn't really like the story, and it prevented me from enjoying The Batman.
Problematic elements
Batman's high tech gadgets: In this realistic setting, Batman's tech looks out of place. At least in the Batman Begins (2005) it was established that he uses prototype military tech, developed by the R&D department of his company.
Bulletproof face: It's true that people usually aim at the torso - and that's armoured -, but during the firefights, people fire blindly at the Batman, with sub-machine guns and automatic rifles. These shooters don't aim directly at his torso, so some of the shots probably got to his face, but didn't even leave a dent.
Inefficient police: There are some cases when the policemen make stupid mistakes.
- Careless investigators: At the first murder, they step into the crime scene, they handle evidence with bare hands.
- Not unmasking the vigilante: When they catch the Batman, why do they leave the mask on?
Too efficient perpetrator: As the Riddler confesses, he is just an ordinary accountant, who lacks the proper skills to take on the criminals of the city. Yet, he is strangely good at committing criminal activities, that accountants are usually not as good at.
- How did the Riddler get into the mayor's house?
- How did the Riddler get into the car of the attorney? Getting in without causing visible damage is not as easy.
- How did the Riddler manage to kill the mob boss with a single shot, under less than ideal conditions? How long did he practice that?
- How did he get the money to fund his operations? He seems to be unemployed, he doesn't seem to steal from the criminals, yet he is able to buy several trucks, loaded with explosives. And while the story doesn't state it, I assume he bought the automatic rifles for his followers, as they used the same type of weapon.
Careless perpetrator: Several times during the story, the Riddler endangers potentially innocent people. This seems to contrast with his desire to kill corrupt people.
The thumb drive: Why does the Batman let Gordon plug in the drive into an unprotected computer that has internet access, while Gordon was logged in to his email account? As far as he knew, they could have infected the whole system with a virus, or let the killer have access to Gordon's emails.
Stupid guards: Why do the Penguin's bouncers just open the door and try to talk down the Batman? Why don't they just leave the door closed? Or at least, pull a weapon before confronting the Batman?
Bruce Wayne: As far as I remember, it takes about an hour for introducing the main character as Bruce Wayne.
Sniping for Falcone: How long did the Riddler wait for Batman to bring Falcone to the light? How did he know when can he sleep so he wouldn't miss that? Did he have some kind of Batman-proximity alarm set on the club?
"Sins of the father": The Riddler seems to want to get rid of the corrupt people of Gotham. He seems to think that he is a vigilante, just like the Batman. Killing the child of a corrupt person doesn't really fit this theme.
Nobody is clean: I don't like it that they involve the father of Bruce in criminal activities. I get it that the creators probably felt that it's dark and edgy, but there are things that are better left clean. It would have been enough that it's implied that he did something, and the Riddler might have even believed it, but it could have been just the machination of Falcone, and in the end it could have turned out that Thomas Wayne was actually innocent and pure. This is something I also didn't like in the latest Joker (2019), so I hope they'll stop this trend.
The Riddler repeatedly saying "Bruce Wayne": It's a cheap trick to make the audience (and Bruce) think that the Riddler has deduced his identity.
Problematic elements compared to the source material
Not very good at batmanning: The Batman in the graphic novels is effective, because he has the funds to make things happen, he is a charismatic person, able to influence people, and he is intelligent, so he is able to solve crimes. These are all traits that the Batman of this movie doesn't have. He doesn't care about dealing with his corporation, he is straight up rude to people, and he doesn't even care about his manners, so he cannot be very clever.
One-shot Riddler: In the graphic novels, the Riddler is a criminal mastermind, who happens to like riddles. In the movie, he just randomly stumbled upon the thing that he started to reveal to the public. And upon completing it, he lost his purpose, as this insider knowledge was his only advantage. I don't think he would make a good recurring antagonist.
Unanswered questions
* * *
Possibilities of improvement
- Cutting out entire parts of the story could probably improve the movie, as it's too long.
- Change the dialogue so it turns out in the end that Thomas Wayne was innocent.
How it could have been better?
Introduce us to the rogue's gallery first, so the audience would understand the setting. This way the audience could try to solve the crimes and find the perpetrator with the Batman, instead of just watching him do the investigation.
Make the protagonists likeable.
Don't get the Wayne family involved in crime.
