Review (spoiler-free) - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, movie (2021)

I knew that some film is about to arrive about Shang-Chi. I don't really know who he is, I've never read his stories. All I know that he is some kind of mystic martial artist, like Iron Fist. I've probably watched the trailer, but I don't remember anything from it.

The Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie is about a martial artist guy, who is drawn into a magical adventure by his father. The father wants to free his mother from a magical prison.

The story was okay. The consistency was not right. The story is cut up into parts due to the flashbacks, and the beginning and the ending have a distinctly different mood. There are some humorous parts, that I liked. However, this humour is more prevalent in the first half, and goes almost missing in the second half. There's a character arc for the female protagonist, and some smaller arcs for some other main characters. There were no major logical problems.

The cinematography is good, the movie is interesting visually. The fights scenes look distinct, and it's easy to follow what's going on. The fight scenes in the beginning remind me of Jackie Chan movies. This playfulness goes away in the second half of the movie.

The characters are somewhat bland, and they are not well developed, maybe except for the antagonist, the evil warlord. The choice of actors was good. The two main characters acted without emotion, showing the hardships of their upbringing. Luckily there was a nice girl (Awkwafina) included, to add some fun to their team. Tony Leung was also very good, playing the evil warlord convincingly. I also hope that more Marvel characters will take the same plane, to see the flight attendant character of Lydia Sarks.

The music (by Joel P. West) is okay.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is an interesting fantasy adventure, I think fans of the genre will enjoy it.

My experience

I was satisfied with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).

Rating: Good (2+ out of 3 points). Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a good action film.

Enjoyment: Good (2+ out of 3 points). Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is interesting, I liked it.

Rewatchability: Average. If you liked the action scenes and the look of the magical setting, you'll probably enjoy watching it again.

Chance of watching it again: There's a chance. Now that I know the story, there's probably no need to watch it again, but I liked it enough that I might watch it in the right circumstances.

Chance of watching a sequel: High. I'd sure watch it.

Will you enjoy this?

If you cannot miss any release related to the Marvel Universe, you'll watch this anyway.

If you are interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you'll probably watch this, no matter what.

If you like fantasy adventures, you might like the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie.

If you like martial arts movies, you might like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

If you like wuxia movies, you might like the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings film.

If you like archeological research adventures (Indiana Jones, Mummy), you might like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, although the focus is not really on the research and investigation.

If you like twists, you might enjoy this movie, as it has twists.

If you hate subtitles, you won't like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as it's full of subtitles when the characters are speaking Chinese.

If you prefer visuals over story, you'll still like this movie, as it looks great.

If you hate romantic movies, there's only a very minor romance in this, so this should be okay.

If you hate comedy, I think this movie has a tolerable amount of comedy, so you might give it a try.

Do you need to see the other films in the series to enjoy this?

The film has a self-contained story. There's enough explanation that you'll understand what's going on without seeing other films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Watching for plot points

If you are interested in adventure stories, I think it's worth watching the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie for the plot points.

Should you watch this on widescreen cinema, IMAX or home cinema?

The action scenes and the fantasy setting probably looks better in cinema, then on your TV screen.

Review with spoilers - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, movie (2021)

I liked the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie.

At the middle point, when the old thespian is introduced, the humorous parts switch to him telling jokes. This is probably to make the main characters look more serious, but I didn't like this change.

Cover

The covers of the movie are okay, they show us what to expect, even though some of them slightly spoils the movie.

The trailer

The trailer is good, it gives us some glimpses into the story, but we don't get enough explanation that I would consider them spoilers.

Promise of the first scene

The story starts in Chinese, with a subtitle. I assume we'll see plenty of subtitles during the film.

We see a montage about a terrorist organisation, based around a magical warlord. I suppose we'll either see how he comes to rule the world in the end, or we'll see someone trying to stop him.

Execution: We got the second option, and that someone defeated the warlord. Also, there were really plenty of subtitles.

Plot summary / Synopsis

There's an evil warlord (Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu / Mandarin), who got his hands on the magical Ten Rings, that give him supernatural powers. He established a criminal organisation all over the world during the past centuries.

1996: The evil warlords meets a warrior woman (Fala Chen as Ying Li). After the warrior woman defeats him, they fall in love, and have a child (Shang-Chi). The mother gives the kid a medal.

Now: The child has grown up to be a young guy (Simu Liu as Xu Shang-Chi), who works in a hotel, with his girlfriend (Awkwafina as Katy). One day, they get mugged on a bus, where a group tries to take the medal. The guy beats the first thugs, then a guy (Florian Munteanu as Razor Fist) steps in who has retractable a power sword instead of a fist. The guy and his girfriend escapes, but the medal is stolen. The attackers also mention that they will go after his sister.

The guy decides to travel to his sister to alert her, as he knows where she lives, as she sent him a postcard. His girlfriend decides to go with him. On the plane he tells that he was raised and trained as the perfect warrior by his father, when he escaped.

They arrive (in Macau) at the place of her sister (Golden Daggers club), when they recruit him into a street fighting match. The organiser promises him that if he wins, he'll help him find his sister. It turns out that his opponent is his sister (Meng'er Zhang as Xu Xialing), who knocks him out. It is revealed that he left his sister at their father when he escaped. After that, she escaped on her own, and built this underground fighting ring. It turns out she didn't send any postcards. The place is being attacked by enemy soldiers. The sister escapes, but returns to save them, only to have her medal stolen. They are captured by their father, and taken to the father's fortress.

The father tells them that their mother is not dead, but trapped in his homeland, and they need to save her. In three days it will be the proper time for the maze to open, and then they'll be able to reach her mother.

They meet the old thespian (Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery) who played the role of the evil warlord to terrorise the USA (in Iron Man 3 (2013)), who has a magical pet (Morris), who tells them that it could lead them through the maze, without waiting for the proper time. They escape from the fortress. They get through the maze, to reach a magical place. They are greeted by their aunt (Michelle Yeoh as Ying Nan). It turns out that in that prison that their father want to open, it's not their mother, but an evil creature (Dweller-in-Darkness), that was put there by a good creature (the Great Protector).

The father arrives, and they start fighting. The son manages to get the magical device from his father, and defeats him. However, the imprisoned evil creature still breaks free, and eats the father. Luckily, the good creature also gets awaken. Together they defeat (and possibly destroy) the evil creature.

After all of this, the son and his girlfriend returns home, and are about to have a drink, when a sorcerer (Benedict Wong as Wong) opens a portal, and calls for him. They get into the portal.

It turns out that when the guy first used the magical device, it activated a beacon.

Then we see that the sister returned to their father's fortress, and takes over the operations.

The setting

Historical and contemporary alternate Earth, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There is magic, super-heroes, and aliens.

Plot points of interests

The were a couple of new elements, and changes to the setting and characters.

Forces

The Ten Rings: Although we have seen parts of the organisation, it's here that we see how it works. There's a guy with magical powers due to an artifact he found, who established a criminal organisation all around the world.

The protectors of Ta Lo: They protect the Dark Gate that's keeping the Dweller-in-Darkness. As long as they is in Ta Lo, the Great Protector dragon gives them magical abilities. They are able to block direct hits from the Ten Rings. They also have weapons made of dragon scale that seems to be able to cut through tough materials, and also, ethereal creatures.

Places

Ta Lo: Their world had much larger cities then those on the Earth, when an evil creature and its armies attacked the world. They were eating the souls of the people. After they've killed almost everyone, they wanted to go to Earth. But the Great Protector arrived, and imprisoned the creature behind the Dark Gate.

The Maze: It protects the gateway between Earth and Ta Lo. Once a year, a passage opens that needs to be walked at the right pace, otherwise you get lost.

The Dark Gate: It's a cave, that's closed with a gate made of dragon scales.

New characters

Dweller-in-Darkness: The evil creature. Once it was able to kill almost all of the people of a world, before it was stopped. It lures people from Earth to free it, planting in their minds that they'll find their most dearest desire behind the Dark Gate, where the creature is imprisoned.

Great Protector: A dragon that lives in the lake at the Dark Gate.

Katy: The girlfriend of Shang-Chi. She decided to follow Shang-Chi, because she was looking for adventure, and she's probably in love with him. During the movie, she's learn to be responsible. She probably retains her dragonscale bow.

Xu Wenwu: Evil warlord, owner of the Ten Rings artifact, and the master of the Ten Rings criminal organisation. He is the husband of Ying Li, and the father of Xu Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing. While he was together with Ying Li, he gave up his magic, and tried to live a normal life, but turned back to crime when his wife died. During the movie, he learnt to be forgiving, and to make a sacrifice for the ones he loves.

Xu Shang-Chi: Son of Xu Wenwu. He was trained to be the best warrior. He escaped from the Ten Rings, leaving his sister. He settled in San Fransisco. During the movie, he learnt to beat his father, and to take his magical artifacts (the Ten Rings). He also got dragonscale armour.

Xu Xialing: Daughter of Xu Wenwu. He trained herself to be a warrior. When she escaped from the Ten Rings, she set up the Golden Daggers club, an underground fighting ring in Macau. During the movie, she learns to make peace with her brother, and she learns that she's better in crime than in playing a hero, and took up her father's organisation.

Ying Li: A protector of Ta Lo, who fell in love with Wenwu. The mother of Xu Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing. A criminal gang murdered her in revenge for what her husband has done.

Changes to characters

Emil Blonsky / Abomination: He seems to be having a good time fighting with Wong in the Golden Daggers club.

Trevor Slattery: After he was imprisoned for impersonating the Mandarin, Xu Wenwu broke him out of prison to kill him. However, he got to like him, and kept him around as a jester.

Wong: He seems to be having a good time fighting with the Abomination in the Golden Daggers club, and drinking with Shang-Chi.

Characters killed

Xu Wenwu: The Dweller-in-Darkness ate him.

Ying Li: A criminal gang murdered her.

Technology

The Ten Rings: They give immortality, and the power of a god (although it's probably an exaggeration. Ususally five ring is worn on each hand, but it looks like all ten can be worn on one hand for extra powerful hits. When used by Xu Wenwu, they glow blue, when used by Shang-Chi, they glow yellow. It allows:

  • protecting against missile weapons
  • jumping high
  • hitting very strongly, even from a distance. One hit went through dozens of people, and still had enough strength to destroy a thick gate.

Dragonscale weapons: They work against magical creatures, even if they are incorporeal.

Dragonscale armour: They provide very good protection.

Analysis of the story - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, movie (2021)

I mostly liked the story, I didn't find major problems that would have prevented me from enjoying Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The message of the story

I'm not sure there's one. "The evil deeds of your past will catch up to you"?

The structure of the story

The scenes of the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings film are mostly played in sequence, following the same storyline. There are many flashback scenes sprinkled between the story.

There's no single viewpoint character.

It has the usual arc of the dramatic structure - beginning, action, resolution.

Things I liked

  • The fantasy world looks good.

Problematic elements

The title: The title sounds like Shang-Chi is about to uncover a legend, that's about the Ten Rings. However, that's not what we get. It could have been a good title for a movie where Shang-Chi tries to uncover the past of his father, and gets to know more and more about the relics. This movie is about the Ta Lo, so it could have been "Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ta Lo", although I admit it that it doesn't have the same ring to it.

Resignated bus driver: When they are fighting on the bus, maybe it's the setting that's so full a crime the bus driver doesn't care, but I still find it strange that no matter how much they fight, the driver still only want to reach the next stop on time.

Lazy Ten Ring soldiers: As they already knew where does the sister live, why did they wait with the attack until the brother arrived? Wouldn't it make beating her twice as hard?

Fighting like savages: In the final battle, both sides seem to forget to fight as an army, they just charge at their enemy randomly. Also, the objective of the defenders is not to let the evil warlord to the prison, yet, no one is assigned to be the one to stop him. So, nobody bothers to stop him, leading to their defeat.

The switch: The movie starts like a Jackie Chan movie, with fun characters and fun action scenes. Then, around the middle, it switches to wuxia with beautiful scenes, and the comedic elements are given to the old thespian, to tell as jokes.

Unanswered questions

Why did the Ten Rings send a letter to Shang-Chi? Why did they want to lure him to Macau?

Why did the Ten Rings thugs start with attacking the siblings, instead of politely asking them, inviting them to the fortress of their father?

* * *

Possibilities of improvement

How it could have been better?

Retain the original Jackie Chan movie feeling without switching to serious wuxia.

* * *

How does it compare to the other works of the creators?

I've seen some works of the story and screenplay writer (Dave Callaham). Doom (2005), The Expendables 2 (2012), and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) was mediocre. The Expendables (2010) and Godzilla (2014) was good.

I haven't seen anything else from the story writer / director (Destin Daniel Cretton).

From the screenplay writer (Andrew Lanham), I haven't seen any other works.

How does it compare to the original source?

I have to admit that I've never read any Shang-Chi story.

In the comics, Shang-Chi was the son of Fu Manchu, who is similar to the Mandarin, and the Mandarin is more closely tied to the Marvel Universe, so it's not a bad choice. Otherwise, his dark past with a criminal father is the same, just like his quest to defeat his own father.

The rings were also regular rings, worn on the fingers, and each had its indiividual powers, just like the Infinity Stones. So, changing the rings to armbands, and losing the individual powers to differentiate from the Infinity Stones is probably a wise choice.

How does it compare to the other films in the series?

Unlike most Marvel movies that are connected to each other in many ways, this feels self-contained, and you can watch Shang-Chi without any previous knowledge of the series.

The story is good enough, similar to other good MCU movies. It's definitely better than Captain Marvel (2019), Black Widow (2021), or Eternals (2021).

Uses for the film - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, movie (2021)

Plot

  • Set on a contemporary fantasy Earth.
  • There's a person, who is the leader of an organisation that secretly rules the criminal underworld.
    • That person wanted to put his criminal past behind himself, but he gets dragged back by his enemies.
  • A man wants to get her wife back, who he thinks is imprisoned.
  • The children of a criminal try to hide from their parent, but the parent wants to get the family back together.
  • There's a person, who is hindered by the expectations and rules of the society, trying to live their dreams.

  • There are young people, returning to the place of their ancestors, reconnecting with their heritage.
  • There's an illegal fight club for people with superhuman abilities.

Scenes

  • The bus fighting scene looks good.
  • The underworld fighting ring scene is good to show a place like that.
  • The scenes when they go though the forest labyrinth could be used to show how a magical forest labyrinth works.
  • The arrival into the magical world is a good way to introduce a magical place.

Scenario ideas - Role-playing game scenario ideas

  • There's a fight against enemies. They fight on a dangerous ground (bus running downhill, ramshackle scaffolding), they need to take control of the situation (drive the bus, get to the right place), while making sure they are not falling off, and the innocents (travellers on the bus, people on the ground) don't get hurt.

Scenario ideas - Wargame scenario ideas

Fight on a moving platform: The models are fighting on a moving platform across the playing area. There can be innocents on the platform, but there are also innocent bystander on the playing area. The platform is controlled by a driver, that uses the platform to go on a planned route. The driver has to spend its action to drive the platform. If the driver has to spend the action on fighting, or the driver gets killed, the platform goes out of control. At the end of the turn, if the platform is out of control, it goes to random direction. If the platform hits a terrain feature (building, tree) during its movement, those on the platform take a hit. If the platform runs into a terrain feature, the platform is stopped, and every model takes a wound. If a model jumps from the platform, it takes a hit. There can be stops in the planned route of the platform, where the platform stays for one turn.

Movie accurate fight: One side has a medal. The other side wants to get it. If they win a round of close combat, they take the medal. Then they have to get out of the playing area to win.

Fight on a scaffolding: The models have to help each other to stay on scaffolding, while fighting enemies. Random explosions can happen from inside the building, as they are also fighting inside. The players set up the playing area together, with a large wall, and multiple levels of scaffolding on it. The game can be played horizontally - the floor represents the wall of the building, the levels of scaffolding are dividers standing vertically on it, and the characters that are standing on the scaffolding are represented by models that are standing on the floor, their base touching the scaffolding. Starting area (d6): 1-2: anywhere on the bottom, 3-4: random area in the middle, 5-6: anywhere on the top.

Movie accurate fight: One side has a medal. The other side wants to get it. If they win a round of close combat, they take the medal. Then they have to get out of the playing area to win.

Moving maze: The playing area is a moving maze. The place is divided into zones. Choose a zone on the edge. One side starts on the inner side of the zone. The pursuers start on the edge. At the beginning of every turn, roll a d6. 1-2: the zone stays, 3: a zone opens to north, 4: a zone opens to east, 5: a zone opens to south, 6: a zone opens to west. When a new zone opens, the previous zone closes at the end of the turn. When a zone closes, every model inside gets a strong hit. Objectives d6: 1-3: the force wants to reach the other side of the playing area to win, 4-6: choose a zone, and there's an objective inside. When the objective is reached, 1-3: it's an exit the force can use to get out of the playing area to win, 4-6: there's an object the force has to get, then leave the playing area to win.

Defending force: The defender decides which zone is open or closed at the beginning of the game, with one open zone at an edge of the playing area. The defender creates a map of open and closed zones for every turn, creating a way from one edge of the playing area to the opposite edge. When the way reaches the end, it stays there for 3 turns, then the maps are used backwards, until they reach the first map again. Then it stays the same for 3 turns, and the maps start to move forward again. The defender deploys their troops in the open zones. The intruder deploys their troops in the open zone.

Breaking the prison gates: On the playing area, there's a prison, with creatures imprisoned inside. If a model attacks the gate of prison, with a succesful hit, a part of it is broken, and one creature will get out. The creatures help the side that belongs to their master, who's in the prison. Otherwise, they attack anyone else. If enough damage is dealt to the gate, it breaks apart, letting the master out. In a two player game, one side wants to open the prison, the other side wants to keep it closed.

Movie accurate fight: The creatures are incorporeal, and they can be only hurt by magical weapons. The attacker wants to open the gate. The defenders want to prevent that. The defenders have magical weapons. The leader of the attackers is the only one that's a servant of the master, so every other model gets attacked by the creatures. If the master gets out, you can include the rules for it from the "Eater of Souls" scenario, and the creatures are its minions. The leader of the attackers and the leader of the defenders are also friends, so the "Battle of Friends" apply to them.

Eater of souls: One side has a leader, that can be hurt, but its minions can feed it with every model they kill. After a minion defeats a model, the model is put to its side, instead of getting removed from play. The minion has to spend an action kill it and remove the edible parts. At the end of the action, the killed model is removed from play, and the minion model gets a token (representing the body, blood, or the soul of the deceased). If they are distracted during the action, they can't get the token. If the defeated model gets destroyed by an effect, the minion can't remove the edible parts. They have to bring this token to the leader. If the leader has wounds, the tokens are spent on healing the wounds. Otherwise, the tokens remain, and if enough of them is accumulated, then the leader gets stronger. The enemy has to kill the minions too, to prevent the leader getting back to maximum health.

Battle of friends: The leader of the two side are friends / family members, put into this unfortunate situation. They have to roll a successful Morale to attack each other, otherwise they just push the other back when achieving a succesful hit.

Miniatures - 1/50-1/60 (28-32mm scale)

Civilians: Human-sized (S3) modern (advanced) human female / male civilian.

Xu Wenwu: Human-sized human warrior with armbands.

Protectors of the magical place: Human-sized humans in robes, armed with spears or bows.

Dragons: Very large chinese dragons. They may take human riders.
