If you'd like to be surprised by the Nope film, I don't recommend you to watch the trailer, because it gives away too much of the plot.

Review (spoiler-free) - Nope, movie (2022)

I didn't know anything about this movie. I didn't even now it's about to be released, although I've heard the title previously. I didn't know anything about this film, but I've heard that the writer is promising, so I thought I'll give Nope a try, without watching the trailer.

I have watched it in Hungarian.

The Nope movie is about a family finding something mysterious on their farm.

The story (by Jordan Peele) is okay. It's a little bit slow, and there are some probably unnecessary storylines, but overall, I liked the setup and the twists. The consistency is okay. There's a character arc for one of the main characters. I didn't find major logical problems.

The cinematography is good. The action scenes are good, easy to follow. The special effects are great. There are some violent scenes, but the injuries happen off-screen.

The characters are acceptable, even though the main protagonists are not very well developed. Their portrayal by the actors is good.

The music (by Michael Abels) is good, it fits the movie perfectly.

Nope is an interesting contemporary fantasy drama, I think fans of the genre will enjoy it.

My experience

I was satisfied with Nope (2022). I happen to like stories with well-thought, logical plots, and Nope delivered just that.

Second watching

Although I didn't watch it again, I'm pretty sure I'd appreciate the additional details I'd get out of the experience.

Rating: Good (2+ out of 3 points). Nope is a well-made film, with multiple bad choices. If it were just a little bit tighter, had been more interesting, and gave more answers, I'd call it Great (3 out of 3).

Enjoyment: Good (2+ out of 3 points). Nope is interesting, I liked it.

Rewatchability: Average. I think it's mostly the surprise of the story that makes you feel interested. However, there are some details in the beginning that I think would be appreciated more by watching it again. So, if you liked to watch it once, I think it adds to the experience to watch it twice.

Chance of watching it again: There's a chance. I didn't enjoy it as much as going in immediately again, but I can imagine that I might watch it in the right circumstances some time in the future.

Chance of watching a sequel: High. I'd sure watch it.

Will you enjoy this?

If you like mystery or thriller movies, you might like Nope.

If you like supernatural or fantasy movies, you might like Nope.

If you like horror or action thriller movies (Alien, Life, Splice), you might like the film, although there are not many action scenes or scary scenes in the Nope movie.

If you like scientific research stories, you might like Nope, as there are elements of investigation, although the focus is not really on that.

If you'd like to get comedic moments in your movies, Nope will disappoint you, as it's mostly serious.

If you don't mind waiting for a long time between interesting things happening, you may enjoy this movie.

If you can get through the first half hour of the movie still interested, from then on it gets into gear, and you might even love this.

If you like to be surprised by the development of events, this movie has plenty of twists.

If you prefer visuals over story, you might still like the cinematography, even though the story is also enjoyable.

If you hate depiction of drug addiction, there are some scenes of recreational drug use.

If you hate violence and gore, there are a couple of violent scenes, but most of that happens off-screen, and gore is not shown.

Watching for plot points

If you are interested in creature stories, I think it's worth watching the Nope movie for the plot points.

Should you watch this on your own screen at home, or is it worth going to the cinema?

In order to get a more immersive experience, and feel what the protagonists feel when they look at the vistas (that's an important element of the plot), I think it's worth going to the cinema. Even for the second watching, it's worth going to there, as you would know now what to look for.

Review with spoilers - Nope, movie (2022)

I mostly liked the Nope movie.

At 25 minutes I started to get bored, but then a couple of minutes later, the movie started to get in gear, and after that it kept my interest.

The movie needs constant attention from the audience, and it requires multiple viewings to fully appreciate every detail. I think it might have worked better as a graphic novel. That way it's easier to spend as much time on a page as you wish, and you can flip a few pages back if you want to check what happened. This doesn't work in a movie.

Cover

Some covers of the movie are okay, but others spoil major parts of the Nope film.

The trailer

I didn't like the trailer, as it spoils major parts of the movie.

If you prefer spoilers, it's a great trailer for the Nope film. If you prefer to avoid spoilers, it will ruin the movie for you.

Promise of the first scene

We see a chimpanzee sitting by an unconscious (dead?) human. I have absolutely no idea what does this mean and where will they take the story.

Execution: Although I think I get it why did they put the chimpanzee into the movie, I don't think this was a good start, and failed to give any proper promise that could have been kept. I'm not satisfied with this.

Plot summary / Synopsis

The movie is divided into chapters.

We see a chimpanzee, sitting by an unconscious human. We also hear news reports about missing people.

Then we see a a man (Daniel Kaluuya as Otis "Junior" Haywood), working on a horse farm. He is talking with his father (Keith David as Otis Haywood), when something happens, and the father falls off the horse. The man takes his father to the hospital, where they find a coin in his skull. When he returns, he sees that a key is stuck in the horse his father was riding. The father later dies.

Some time later, a film studio hires their company (Haywood's Hollywood Horses), so the man and his sister (Keke Palmer as Emerald Haywood) go to the studio with a horse (Lucky). The sister is occupied with talking to the crew, trying to build her acting career, and despite the warnings of the man, a crewmember startles the horse, that scares the studio people. They get dismissed, and the man is angry at the sister, who didn't do her job.

They go to a Western theme park (Jupiter's Claim) to sell the horse. The owner of the theme park (Steven Yeun as Ricky 'Jupe' Park) was an actor, and he tells some stories to the sister, including a story about a chimpanzee gone mad during filming a show.

Ghost

When they get back to the farm, one of the horses (Ghost) escapes and runs away. The man goes after the horse, suddenly there's power outage, and he sees something strange. The sister decides to make a video of it, so they could sell to hoax news. They hire a tech guy (Brandon Perea as Angel Torres) to set up security cameras around the place.

Clover

At the farm at night, a lamp gets switched on. The man switches it off, but it gets switched on, and he sees multiple humanoids, but it turns out it's some kids in masks. They also let out one of the horses (Clover). As the man goes after the horse, there's a power outage, and the horse escapes. Something lifts the horse statue they had on the farm. The thing than catches the horse.

They decide to hire a cameraman (Michael Wincott as Antlers Holst). The tech guy notices that on an accelerated playback, one of the clouds stands still.

Gordy

1998: We see the filming of the show with the chimpanzee (Gordy), as he injures some cast members, before being shot down.

Now: The kid actor, who grew up to be the owner of the theme park still has flashbacks about the event.

Lucky

In the theme park, the owner starts a show (Star Lasso Experience), telling the audience that he saw a flying saucer over those mountains where they are, when he was young (Edit: According to WikiPedia, it happened half a year ago). He intends to set a horse (Lucky) loose for the aliens to catch, but the thing comes earlier and closer than anticipated.

The man gets to the theme park to buy back his horse (Lucky), only to find the place empty - the thing took everyone except the horse, that's still in a glass box. As he watches the thing going around the area, he realises that it acts like an animal, defending its territory. He warns his sister on phone.

On the farm, the sister and the tech guy try to hide from the thing. They hear the screams of people being digested, then several items fall out of the air. They all stay until the sun rises. The man drives a car to the farm, but the power outage takes the car out. He opens another car, so they can escape. As the thing flies by, he doesn't look at it, remembering his training not to anger the animals.

Although they've survived, the animals are left on the farm. They go back, and find the cameraman there. He also noticed the unmoving cloud. He brought a non-electric camera to make the film. The man volunteers to lure the thing out. They prepare for this. They name the thing Jean Jacket, after a horse that the sister loved.

Jean Jacket

They switch on the battery powered inflatable tubes, partly to raise attention and partly to show where the thing is. They turn on the music to get wake up the thing. The man rides a horse to act as bait.

A stranger (Devon Graye as Ryder Muybridge) arrives on a motorcycle, revealed to be a a TMZ reporter. Despite the warnings of the sister, the stranger rides inside the area. When it gets into the power outage, the stranger falls off the motor. The man tries to save the stranger, and tells him to stay calm and look at him, but he begs him to make a video of him getting eaten. He looks up at the thing, and it swallows him. The thing flies very close to the man, but it looks at the ground, so it ignores him. Then he lets some flags fly around him, angering the thing. As the thing goes after him, they are able to make a good shot of it. However, the cameraman decides to go out, and film it as the thing eats him. The thing gets angry, and starts to swallow up the area, including the place where they were hiding the film rolls. The thing grows and changes shape. The man distracts the thing long enough for the sister to reach and start the motorcycle. As the thing goes after the sister, the sister rides into the theme park, and lets a balloon cowboy loose. She then uses an old camera to make photos of it, as the thing swallows the balloon. The balloon explodes, causing the thing to stop.

The sister and the man reunite at the theme park, both of them surviving the ordeal. The police arrives to close off the area.

The setting

Contemporary fantasy Earth, probably 2022.

Creatures like the thing exist in this world.

The thing

Most of the time it's invisible (camouflaged?), acting like an unmoving cloud.

When it moves, it is extremely fast, and it is able to instantly change direction, at least in its aerodynamical saucer shaped body.

When it gets hungry, it sucks horses (and people) into the air, that get into its digestive tube. It can easily lift about one ton of weight. It can take dozens of people at once in its guts. Digesting takes a long time, living creatures are screaming through the process. After it digests all organic materials, it spits out the rest, making random things fall from the sky. It might be able to choose the time and place of spitting things out, using them to damage their intended target. It might be only able to propel magnetic metals to great speed spits, while non-magnetic materials are just dropped.

It has trouble sucking up anything that has a roof above it. Although, later we see that it can create whirlwinds that can tear the roofs of houses.

It's not very clever, as it also tries to eat a horse statue.

It probably doesn't attack if you don't look at it. They even use a blindfold on the horse to protect it from the thing. For me, this doesn't make much sense. I'm not even sure how can it sense whether or not someone is looking at it. I'm pretty sure regular humans have a hard time telling whether or not some bug is staring at them.

It projects a field that messes up electronic devices, as if they were powered down. When the field passes over them, they start functioning normally.

According to the creators, the thing might not be an alien, but a yet undiscovered creature, that is very adapt at hiding in the sky. I find this unlikely. Even if it's the last of its species, as it eats weekly, it would be quickly noticed due to the sheer number of missing people and animals, unless it moves regularly, but we see that it stays in this place for at least half a year. It might work if it was dormant in a torpor state, and it had recently awakened, but the movie doesn't indicate any of this.

When active, most of the time it looks like a round shape with a hole in the middle. However, it can change shape to reveal floating cloak-like parts and tentacle-like things.

When it tries to scare things away, it uses a trumpet-like protrusion, that changes colours.

According to the creators, it's 250 feet (76.2 meters) wide.

Analysis of the story - Nope, movie (2022)

I mostly liked the story, I didn't find logical problems that would have prevented me from enjoying Nope, however, I'm not entirely satisfied with the dramatisation.

The message of the story

I'm not sure there's one. "Don't get near animals"?

The structure of the story

The scenes of the Nope film are mostly played in sequence, following the same storyline. There are some flashbacks.

There's no single viewpoint character.

It has the usual arc of the dramatic structure - introduction, action, a conclusion, then some more action, and an another conclusion that still ends without resolution.

Parallels with other stories

The writer stated the following movies as inspiration:

Buck and the Preacher (1973): The first film to feature a Black cowboy.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977): Aliens visit the Earth with good intentions.

Jurassic Park (1993): Giant animals are used in a theme park. The creator wanted to invoke humanity's addiction to spectacles, despite the danger.

King Kong (1933 / 1976 / 2005): A giant animal is used in a show. The creator wanted to invoke humanity's addiction to spectacles, despite the danger.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995-1996): The creature design is based on Sahaquiel, the tenth angel. The name of Angel might be a reference to the story.

Signs (2002): Aliens visit a farm on Earth with bad intentions. The aliens get defeated by a random event.

The Wizard of Oz (1939): The name of Emerald might be a reference to the story.

Fan-service

Scenes and elements from previous works:

National Lampoon's Animal House (1978): The end card is a reference to the card in that movie.

Sallie Gardner at a Gallop (1878): The short film is shown.

Scorpion King (2002): The film is mentioned. The horse trainer wears a Scorpion King crew hoodie in the end.

Siegfried and Roy (2003): An animal show, where one of the animal trainers got injured during a live show.

Us (2019): The scissors from the Us movie are shown on the desk of the theme park owner. The 11:11 reference is shown as 1111 on the license plate of the tech guy.

Things I liked

  • I liked the look of the creature.
  • I liked the concepts of the creature.

Problematic elements

The slow start: The beginning is too long for its contents. Nothing happens for long stretches of time. I think the first 30 minutes should have been cut more tightly, to fit into 25 minutes or so.

The chimpanzee story: I'm not entirely sure we really needed to have this story. It could have worked if the movie was about the theme park owner, and we had seen more about his story, until he met his unfortunate demise, and then we could have switched viewpoint to the horse trainer, although I think that this switch would have worked better as a separate movie.

Even the first scene sets up this storyline, so if the theme park owner were the protagonist, it could work better.

(Update: A reviewer wrote that the theme park owner dared to make a spectacle out of the thing because he thought that due to his survival at the chimpanzee massacre, he was spared due to his connection to the animal. While this might be true, I didn't feel this part of the story was emphasized enough for me to understand.)

A film as evidence: I'm not entirely convinced that anyone would find a photo or even a video enough of an evidence of the existence of a creature like the thing. If they were really serious, they should have created traps, trying to get pieces of its skin, or made a lab, examining the inorganic materials it spits out. A film might have worked 20-30 years ago, but nowadays everything can be faked, and people know this well enough.

The digestive canal: While it's a nice scene, it works against the mystery of the story, and cheapens the time when we actually see it through the camera of the camera operator, getting sucked in. It would be probably better, if the camera guy's dead would be the first instance we get a glimpse into the innards of the thing.

No conclusion: The whole plot is built on their plan on getting footage of the thing, then trying to sell it. We don't get to see anything of that. I would have liked to get to know whether they succeeded in that, or even if they just changed their minds, and don't think it's important for them any more. Without these, the movie just ends, without any kind of proper resolution.

Lack of answers: While watching a movie about some unknown thing, it gives a better experience for the audience to get answers to most of their questions. This movie doesn't answer most of their questions, as I feel that the actual plot for the creators was secondary to the message they wanted to get through.

The theme park owner wanting to buy the farm: If the theme park owner was really convinced that the creature lived there, I'm almost sure he would have put a lot more pressure on the farm owner in order to get to the thing. The scene with the masked kids would have been a good indication off this, had it happened regularly.

The theme park owner inviting the owner of the farm: As the theme park owner intends to sacrifice the horse he bought from the farm owner, I don't think this was a wise choice. It would make the farm owner less likely to sell him any more horse. It's debatable whether or not the show would make him less likely or more likely to sell the area.

The tech guy: I don't think the character was necessary. The man and the sister could have easily have the knowledge to install and operate cameras, and it would have made one less character to follow. He might have been useful as a sacrifice, to add some tension, but this didn't happen.

Confused audience: I've read many reviews who give bad ratings because they couldn't understand what happened. Some other reviewers mock them for being stupid, but it's actually the creator's job to make sure that the audience understands what's going on. So, it's actually the fault of the creators that they were so intent on making things mysterious, that many of the reveals were missed by some people. Figuring things out is an enjoyable experience, but after you give some time for the audience to use their sharp minds, it's also helpful to tell them what actually happened. This wouldn't hurt those who have figured everything out themselves, but it would help those who haven't. Keeping the secrets would work for streaming media, where you can reload a scene multiple times until you get every detail, but you can't do that while watching a movie in a cinema.

  • How did the old farmer die? What's up with that coin? The coin was an undigested inorganic object that the thing spat out, and it accidentally hit the old farmer. We don't know how did the farmer die, although the movie implies that it was killed by this accident.
  • Where did the flying objects come from? Those are the undigested inorganic objects that the thing spat out,
  • Is there a reason why the aliens abduct animals and people? There are no "aliens", just a single creature, and it doesn't just abduct, but also eats them, giving it the reason for the abductions.
  • Why does the spaceship eat people? Because it's not a spaceship, but a living creature.
  • Why does the creature visit the theme park owner? It doesn't just visit it, it's implied that every time it gets fed with a horse.
  • Why didn't the theme park employees have seen the creature? They did. They just probably didn't think it would be this dangerous.
  • Why didn't the theme park guests have seen the creature? They did, as there were a couple of shows (not seen in the movie) when everything went according to plan. Some of them might have even believed it. The rest probably thought it was a good effect.
  • Why does the massacre at the theme park go unnoticed? It doesn't go unnoticed, it's just happens off-screen. When the sister rides through the area, you can see the yellow police strips.
  • Why does the cameraman sacrifice himself? He wanted to make the perfect shot, and he wanted to be remembered for that. He might have been inspired by the TMZ reporter, who didn't care about dying as long as it was filmed.
  • Why does the creature eat the balloon that has flags, when it was established that it's afraid of flags? First, the creature is not afraid of flags, it gets angered by them. However, it is afraid of the balloon, it visibly hesitates, and tries to scare the balloon away before it swallows it. It swallows it because it doesn't seem to have other tools to defeat it.
  • Why does the explosion of the balloon lead to the complete destruction of the creature, when sharp metal objects didn't hurt it? We don't know how much damage did the sharp objects cause, but the creature is probably able to withstand or regenerate that, as it's part of its digestion. An explosion could cause a totally different kind of damage to its digestive tracts. Also, we don't see the creature being destroyed, or even killed - we just see that after the explosion, it stops chasing the protagonists for the next couple of minutes.
  • What's up with Gordy, the chimpanzee? Was he controlled by the aliens? There are probably no aliens in this story. The chimpanzee was startled by the pop of a balloon. I'm also not entirely sure we really needed to have those scenes in the movie.

Unanswered questions

  • Why does the thing ignore people who don't look at it? What prevents it from attacking them?
  • How much does the thing need to eat? It seems huge, although it's true it spends most of its time dormant.
  • Why does the thing stay here? While the area is not very crowded, there are still people around. If it wanted to have a quiet place to rest, I'm almost sure it could have easily found one.
  • Why does OJ decide to buy back the horse? According to some reviewers, it's because he realised that Jupe feeds the horses to the creature, but I don't see any indication of this in the movie itself.
  • Why doesn't the area show up clearly on Google Maps? Does Google or the government know about the creature and try to hide its existence?
  • What have happened to the thing after the explosion?
  • What have happened to the tech guy? We last see him rolling down the hill.
  • Why did the creature change its shape? Some reviewers say it's because it was injured by the barbed wire, but it's not very clear in the film.
  • Were they able to retrieve and use the camera footage? The thing seemed to wreck their camera hideout, and it had swallowed the other camera.
  • Was the sister able to get her hands on the photos before the police arrived to seize it as evidence?
  • Did they get rich by selling the footage? The whole point of their operation was to reach this.

* * *

Possibilities of improvement

  • Trim the beginning: Make it slightly faster.
  • Cut the digestive canal: I'm not sure we really need to see that, especially before it's being shown by the camera operator.
  • Add dialogue to explain things: Many things were left for the audience to figure out. While it's fun, but after giving them time to figure it out, also spell it out for those who didn't get those by themselves.

How it could have been better?

Add characters the can be hurt: If it was really intended as a horror film (I consider it a fantasy drama), then there should have been characters, who could get hurt, get traumatised, who have something to lose. However, it was clear that the man and the sister are untouchables, and they didn't care about anything enough to feel any kind of loss. As we know that nothing will happen to them, there's not much tension in the action scenes.

Changing the thing during the events: I would have preferred if the thing were changing, even slightly, adapting to the changes in the tactics of the protagonists. New abilities could have been revealed, theories could have been proven wrong, to add some twist to the story.

Establish things for the audience: When the protagonist realises things about the creature, it would be great if the audience had the chance to come to the same realisation around that time. For example, when he finds out that the thing is a territorial creature, defending it's area, it would be good if we'd see plenty of actions of territorial creatures, so we could see the same patterns he does.

Add some conclusion: Any kind of conclusion is better than none.

* * *

How does it compare to the other works of the creators?

I haven't seen any other works of the writer (Jordan Peele).

I haven't seen any other movies from the director (Jordan Peele).

The player sets up the playing area, and marks the middle as the objective area. Then the player deploys their 6-10 models anywhere on the playing area. The models have close combat weapons, one of them may get a ranged weapon. One of them may get a fast mount or vehicle. On a 4-6, choose the next model, and do this until the creature appears. If every model has been chosen once, start the process again. After the creature appears, it uses Random aggressive movement. When the creature gets into the objective area, the player wins. The creature wins when the last player model is killed.

Random success for victory: When the creature gets into the objective area, roll a d6. On 1-3, the player is able to achieve their goal. On a 4-6, they have to lure the creature into the spot again.

Intruders (two player game): Another force enters the playing area at the beginning of the second turn. Place the models on one of the edges of the playing area, then roll a d6:

    • 1-2 - Hunters: They want to kill the creature. They carry weapons that's used by soldiers. Every model has to attack the creature once. The intruders win if more than half of their models has made a successful attack.
    • 3-4 - Protectors: They want to defend the creature from the attackers. They carry close combat weapons, one of them may get a ranged weapon. The intruders win if they kill more than half of the attacker models.
    • 5-6 - Travellers: They want to cross the playing area. They carry close combat weapons, one of them may get a ranged weapon. The intruders win if more than half of their models is able to leave at the opposite edge.
