Review (spoiler-free) - Jurassic World 3: Dominion, movie (2022)

I knew that the movie was coming, but it still surprised me when it suddenly appeared in the theatres. As I like the first Jurassic Park film, and the first Jurassic World was acceptable, I still hope that this episode will be at least watchable. To avoid online spoilers, I tried to watch the movie as soon as possible. Even though I didn't run to the premiere, there was not much online gossip about Jurassic World Dominion, so I didn't take this as a good sign. I didn't watch the trailer, but I've seen all of the previous episodes.

I watched the movie in Hungarian, but as I trust Hungarian translations, I assume it was close to the original.

The Jurassic World 3: Dominion movie is about scientists trying to prevent a global catastrophe.

The premise of the story is not very interesting, but the creators managed to put a number of twists into that to make a good adventure movie. There are no character arcs. There are plenty of logical problems. The movie is otherwise a very intensive, often tense action / adventure story, that I'd probably love if it weren't full of logical problems and full of a series of improbably events that just keep happening to the protagonists.

The cinematography is great. The scenes look good. There are some very nice, cinematic shots. There are plenty of visually distinct locations, so it's always clear where does the action happen. The action scenes are great, easy to follow. The special effects are mostly seamless.

Practically all of the characters are short-sighted and incompetent, and we don't really get to know anything about them. The actors, however, are acceptable for these roles.

The music (by Michael Giacchino) is okay, it fits the themes of the movie, but it's not epic nor memorable.

Compared to the previous two episodes in the Jurassic Park series, I feel that Dominion works fine even as a stand alone adventure movie.

Jurassic World 3: Dominion is an interesting sci-fi adventure, that I think fans of the genre would enjoy, if they are able to accept the high number of lucky coincidences.

My experience

I was not satisfied with Jurassic World 3: Dominion (2022). I prefer stories with well-thought, logical plots, and Jurassic World 3: Dominion couldn't deliver that.

Rating: Average (2 out of 3 points). Jurassic World 3: Dominion is a watchable film if you are forgiving to the mistakes.

Enjoyment: Weak (2- out of 3 points). Jurassic World 3: Dominion was annoying, even though I liked many parts of it.

Rewatchability: High. I think if you liked it for the first time, you've found joy in watching the action scenes or the adventure unfolding, so you might be interested in watching the story multiple times.

Chance of watching it again: Very low. Now that I know the story, there's no need to watch it again.

Chance of watching a sequel: I'd probably watch it.

Will you enjoy this?

If you like mystery or thriller movies, you might like Jurassic World 3: Dominion.

If you like adventure movies, you might like Jurassic World 3: Dominion.

If you like scientific research stories (Andromeda Strain), you might like Jurassic World 3: Dominion, although the focus is not really on the research and investigation.

If you'd like to get comedic moments in your movies, Jurassic World 3: Dominion will disappoint you, as it's mostly serious.

If you can get through the first half hour of the movie still interested, the rest of the movie repeat the some things, but in a more intensive way..

If you enjoyed the Jurassic Worlds series, you might be interested in this story.

If you don't mind illogical elements in your movies, you will be able to enjoy this.

If you prefer visuals over story, this movie looks great.

Things you are required to know to enjoy this

The movie establishes early on everything you need to know.

Do you need to see the previous films to enjoy this?

No, there's enough explanation that you'll understand what's going on without seeing any of the previous films.

If you really feel that you want to watch something, you could watch Jurassic World (2015), that gives you enough information about everything, although it's not a great movie. You may watch Jurassic Park (1993), that's actually good, and although you won't really know the new characters, you won't really miss anything interesting. If you really want to watch several movies, watch Jurassic Park (1993) to get a good movie, then watch Jurassic World (2015), and probably the last 20 minutes of Jurassic Park 2: Fallen Kingdom (2018). That will give you enough background to know everything you are required to know for Jurassic Park Dominion.

Watching for plot points

If you are interested in biological / genetical research stories, I think it's worth watching the Jurassic World 3: Dominion movie for the plot points, although reading the summary might be enough for that.

If you are interested in adventure stories, I think it's useful to watch Jurassic World Dominion to avoid all those irritating coincidences the creators stuffed into the film.

Should you watch this on your own screen at home, or is it worth going to the cinema?

There are very nice, cinematic scenes, so the visuals definitely look better if you watch it in cinema. Those might enhance your enjoyment even if you are not thrilled by the actual story.

Review with spoilers - Jurassic World 3: Dominion, movie (2022)

I didn't like the Jurassic World 3: Dominion movie.

From a Jurassic Park movie, I'd expect that the plot will be something about dinosaurs. However, the actual plot didn't really include dinosaurs, they were just background elements. The whole story would have worked even without a single dinosaur, although then they would have needed to add some cougars or grizzlies to add some wilderness danger to the movie. As the protagonists were never really in danger, the sources of potential danger could have been anything, it wouldn't have mattered.

Cover

The cover of the movie is okay. It doesn't say much, but at least it doesn't spoil the movie.

The trailer

The trailers are okay, although they spoil some minor parts of the movie.

If you prefer spoilers, it's a great trailer for the Jurassic World 3: Dominion film. If you prefer to avoid spoilers, it will make the movie less fun for you.

Promise of the first scene

There's a news report about the recreated dinosaurs roaming the world free. I have no clue where will they lead this story. I can't really imagine they would be able to contain the situation, or hunt every dino down.

Execution: The movie actually surprised me that it was about giant locusts, instead of dinosaurs - those were just some background elements. However, the setup was totally misleading. It should have started with the locusts to properly prepare a promise.

Plot summary / Synopsis

Dinosaurs have spread all over the world. Only the company that owns them (BioSyn) is legally allowed to hunt or capture them.

In Nevada, the team of an animal activist woman (Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing) find an illegal dino (Triceratops) farm. Instead of just reporting it in, they to bring one of the weak animals with them.

In Sierra Nevada, a team, lead by an animal handler man (Chris Pratt as Owen Grady) tries to capture a group of hadrosaurs (Parasaurolophus) with lassos. Because they are not very good at catching them, they only get one.

We see that the animal activist woman is harbouring a girl (Isabella Sermon as Maisie Lockwood), who is a clone. The animal handler man also lives with them. They are spotted by shady looking people.

In Texas, a farm is attacked by a swarm of giant locusts. A scientist woman (Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler) arrives to investigate it. It looks like the locusts ate everything except corn that was genetically designed by the BioSyn company.

In Utah, a paleonthologist (Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant) is visited by the scientist woman, showing him a captured giant locust. They think that these genes died out a long time ago, in the Cretacean period. The woman wants to investigate the BioSyn laboratory, and she asks him to accompany her, to be a witness if required. Luckily they already have an invitation from a pessimist scientist (Malcolm), so they go there.

A Raptor and its child approaches the farm of the man, so he asks for the girl to stay inside, while he goes out into the woods. The girl decides to leave the house, and ride her bike to the nearby town. The shady people see this, and decide that this is a good time to strike. The shady people capture the Raptor child. They also capture the girl. The woman and the man visit their contact at the CIA, who tells them that they plan to stop the operation of the shady people, and they have men at the location. He asks them to refrain from anything that would endanger their operation.

The paleonthologist and the scientist woman arrive in Italy, to the lab. They meet with the pessimist scientist (Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm). He gives them information about the giant locusts.

At Malta, the girl and the dino child arrives, so they can be sold to the company. The activist woman and the animal handler man also arrives there. They meet with their CIA contact, who asks them not to intervene. The CIA contact leads them to a dinosaur black market. Luckily, the only person the woman approaches on the black market with the photo of the girl, happens to be the pilot (DeWanda Wise as Kayla Watts) who brought her here.

The CIA stops the meeting of the criminals, but the girl is not there. The female boss (Dichen Lachman as Soyona Santos) of the criminals let loose some remotely targeted Utahraptors. The female boss tells the female activist that they took the girl to the BioSyn lab, before they escape. While escaping from a Raptor, luckily the female activist falls into the truck of the pilot she previously met, who brings her to her plane. Luckily, the animal handler escapes just that way, so he is able to get on the plane.

The girl arrives at the lab. She talks to an old scientist (BD Wong as Dr. Henry Wu), who reveals to her that her mother was able to reproduce without fertilisation, that is how she gave birth to her own clone child - the girl.

The paleonthologist and the female scientist agree with their guide (Mamoudou Athie as Ramsay Cole) that they'll meet at that place in 30 minutes, until they get some time to roam around the building free. They get bracelets off-screen (Update: It turns out that was the pessimist scientist who gave the bracelet to them in secret), that allow them access to the secret laboratories. They find the giant locusts. The girl decides right this time that she lets the Raptor child free, so they sound the alarm. The alarm alerts the giant locusts and they attack the intruders. Luckily the escaping girl runt into them. They also run into their guide, who reveals that he is there to help them retrieve the evidence. They get into a subway train.

The plane of the female activist and the animal handler arrives near the lab, but they don't let them land. Instead, they switch off the anti-pterosaur grid, that lets a flying pterosaur (Quetzalcoatlus) attack their plane. The plane is damaged, and it starts to fall down. The female activist uses the catapult seat to land in the nearby forest, while the plane crashes near the laboratory. Luckily, both the animal handler and the pilot survives without any kind of damage.

The leaders of the lab find it out that the intruders are on a subway train, so they stop it in the middle of the way, but they let them out of the train. They also find it out that the intruders got an access bracelet from the pessimist scientist, so they fire him. On his way out, he takes a car and tries to find the intruders. The intruders get attacked by creatures (Dimetrodons), but when they find an exit, there's a closed gate on it. Luckily, the pessimist scientist arrives just at this moment, so he could let them out, although he also needs the help of the guide working at the base. They get into his car.

The animal handler and the pilot find and save the activist woman, just when she is being attacked by a dinosaur.

At the lab they try to burn the locusts to get rid of the evidence, but these locusts are so tough and strong that they are able to break security glass, while they are burning and suffocating. The burning locust swarm get out into the forest, and start a forest fire. The leaders of the lab decide to evacuate the base.

The intruders, while trying to get away in the car, have an accident, and fall off a cliff, a few meters away from the animal handler and his team. They get attacked by a dinosaur (Giganotosaurus), but they get into a building and chase the creature away. They decide to get to the only helicopter on the base, but they need to switch on the anti-pterosaur defences.

Luckily, they can get to the control room without being stopped. While they are switching on the required systems, they even find and tranquilise the Raptor child. They also meet the old scientist, who offers to find a way to kill the giant locusts that are free, if they take him, and let him experiment on the girl, who has genetic modifications he needs to examine. They agree.

Due to their tampering, the subway train of the lab leader (Campbell Scott as Dr. Lewis Dodgson) stops, so he gets out just to be killed by Dilophosauri.

The team reaches the helicopter, while various dinosaurs fight in the background.

They reach safety, they give interviews to reporters. The paleonthologist and the female scientist share a kiss. The old scientist developed a way to get rid of the locusts (although we don't see whether it works or not). The pilot buys a new plane. The animal handler reconnects the Raptor child with the mother.

The setting

Alternate / fantasy Earth, probably the 2020s.

In this world, genetics are highly advanced compared to our world. They are able to create animals from traces of DNA, and modify DNA of living creatures.

Dominion is set four years after the previous episode, Fallen Kingdom, where genetically recreated dinosaur-like creatures were let loose on the world. Now these creatures live everywhere on Earth, and some of them can reproduce.

Plot points of interests

The were a couple of changes to the setting and characters.

Forces

BioSyn: The company that owns the technology to create dinosaurs.

New characters

Kayla Watts: Female pilot, who works for BioSyn. She decides to help Owen and Claire.

Ramsay Cole: He works with Malcolm to give evidence to Ellie against BioSyn.

Soyona Santos: Female criminal boss, who works for BioSyn.

Changes to characters

Dr. Alan Grant: He is single. At the end, he kisses with Ellie Sattler.

Claire Dearing: He lives with Owen and Maisie.

Dr. Ellie Sattler: She has children, but she has divorced from her husband. At the end, she kisses with Alan Grant.

Dr. Henry Wu: He still works for BioSyn in the beginning, but when things turn worse, he changes his mind. He designed the giant locust swarm.

Dr. Ian Malcolm: He has one child? He helps Ellie to get to the BioSyn lab, and then to get into the secret laboratory.

Dr. Lewis Dodgson: The leader of BioSyn. He gets killed by Dilophosauri.

Maisie Lockwood: She is 14 years old now. She has been living with Claire and Owen in an isolated farm for four years. Her mother was a genetic scientist, who used her own DNA to clone herself into her own daughter, that became Maisie. After she was born, she reconstructed the DNA of every cell in her body to make her more healthy.

Owen Grady: He lives with Claire and Maisie.

Characters killed

Dr. Lewis Dodgson: He gets killed by Dilophosauri, just like Nedry did in Jurassic Park (1993).

Technology

  • Anti-pterosaur defences: The defences prevent the pterosaurs from flying out of the valley. I'm not sure if it's some distracting ultrasound device, or a force field. That wasn't made clear in the movie.
  • DNA changing: They can change the DNA in every cell in a living body.
  • DNA fusing: They can fuse DNA with an infection, allowing it to spread to members of a species, and kill all of them.

Analysis of the story - Jurassic World 3: Dominion, movie (2022)

Although I liked the concept of the story, but there were so many unbelievable happenings that those prevented me from enjoying Jurassic World 3: Dominion.

It has every set piece for an epic movie, it just doesn't add up to be good. In many instances, it feels like Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), but at least the scenes are not shot at night.

The message of the story

"Genetically modified organisms are bad. Even if it would save crops from being eaten by pests." "Living in peace with nature is good. Even if it means that giant carnivores will roam the streets."

The structure of the story

The scenes of the Jurassic World 3: Dominion film are played in sequence, following parallel storylines that converge at the end. There are some scenes that show records of events happening in the past.

There's no single viewpoint character.

It has the usual arc of the dramatic structure - a very long introduction, action, resolution.

Fan-service

Scenes and elements from previous stories:

Jurassic Park, novel by Michael Crichton (1990)

  • In the beginning news report, a little girl is chased by Compis, just like it happened in the beginning of the novel.
  • The structure of the story is also similar to the novel. There are many cases of strange happenings all over the world, then we meet the protagonists, who get involved. Then they all get into the same place, where the actual story will happen.

Jurassic Park, movie (1993)

  • People trapped in a vehicle, with Raptors around.
  • Giant carnivore chasing people around a car turned on its head.
  • One of the bad guy gets sprayed by Dilophosauri, then he gets eaten by them. It's Nedry in the original, here, it's Nedry's employer.
  • Grant tells the others not to move, when a giant carnivore approaches.
  • A man distracts a giant carnivore with a light. In the original, Malcolm did it with a flare, here with a flaming branch.
  • The Barbasol cannister. Used by Nedry in the first movie, here, it's his employer.
  • The chest of Jeff Goldblum.

Jurassic World, movie (2015)

  • Owen driving a motorcycle, with Raptors running around him
  • Barry and Owen trapping Raptors in a cage.

Indiana Jones series

  • Alan Grant reaches back for his hat, just like Indiana Jones does.

Things I liked

  • I liked the look of the helicopter.
  • I liked the fight on the frozen lake, although it didn't make much sense.

Problematic elements

Getting out of the illegal dino farm: Why did the guy need to burst in? Why couldn't he just wait in the dark so the women get out? Then there would have been no car chase, that endangered both the team and the already weak dino.

Alerting the illegal dino farm guards: The team knows that it will take days for the officials to arrive and investigate the place. Now that they've alerted the criminals, they can just pack up and move to another place. This makes the main characters look stupid and incompetent.

Catching hadrosaurs with lasso, while riding a horse: You can catch horses or cattle that way, because a heavy weight stallion has a similar weight. However, a hadrosaur could weight up to 4 tons. Even if they catch them, the exact same thing happens we see in the movie - the horse will fall due to that extra weight that the animal can't bear. The falling might damage the horse. So, doing that intentionally makes the characters look inconsiderate and incompetent.

Taming the hadrosaur in seconds: Unless the guy has some supernatural power, he shouldn't go that near to the animal, because he could be bitten or kicked. The fact that the thing works, assume magic is happening.

Lack of safety concerns: Even though deadly predators roam the whole world, humanity doesn't look concerned. They don't build strong, high, electric fences, deep ditches, or any kind of protection against them. They travel on bikes in the wilderness. They spend the night outside, while knowing that there are potentially deadly carnivores in the vicinity.

Lack of safety in the laboratory: As RedLetterMedia points out, in the SynLab laboratory, there are plenty of chemicals laying around, without a lid or bottlecap. Even if they don't evaporate and mix create poisonous gases, it's still easy to accidentally spill them.

Sheer luck at the black market: There was only one slightly neutral person at the black market who happened to see the captured girl. The only person the activist woman shows the photo of the girl is this person. This is very convenient for plot purposes.

The release of the Raptors: The CIA agents have weapons in their hands. They are probably trained in their use. As part of the dino squad, they probably know that they are getting surrounded by dangerous creatures. Why don't they use their guns? Do they consider the life of endangered animals worth more than their own?

Giving information: Why does the female boss tell Claire where did they bring the girl? As a professional criminal, she shouldn't give up information for free.

Chase on the rooftops: Although I'm not an architect, I'm almost sure the rooftops on Malta were not prepared to expect a 1 ton beast jumping on them. I'd expect that the chase would end very quickly, as the Raptor falls into an attic.

Sheer luck on the streets: Of all the cars on the street, the protagonist happens to fall right into the truck of the only local she knows. And that local just happens to decide to help her instead of escaping from the raptor.

Sheer luck on the bike: Of all the roads Owen could have taken, he ends up exactly where Claire and the pilot went. I get it that try try to convey that Malta is small, but it's not that small.

A series of lucky coincidences: Grant and Ellie get into the lair of the locusts, aware that any noise could alert them. The girl lets the Raptor free just in those few minutes when they are in the locust lair, so the alarm that sounds would arouse them. Then, while the two of them try to escape from the locust, the girl happens to run into them. And then the girl happens to recognise them from 30 year old photos, even though they are older, wear a hazmat suit, and in a completely different context.

Switching off the anti-pterosaur defences: If I understand correctly, the defences prevent the pterosaurs from flying out of the valley. When they switch that off, that means that they are free to roam from there. Why does the lab leader order that to be switched off? For the slim chance that one of the pterosaurs will randomly run into the plane and deals with the intruders? Wouldn't it be safer for them if they just shoot the plane out of the air? After the plane crashed, why didn't they switch it on? Wouldn't the presence of flying dinosaurs endanger the evacuation of the personnel?

Attack of the pterosaur: Are these creatures trained to attack planes? Otherwise, I don't think any animal would just attack a totally unknown thing flying nearby.

The ejector seat: As the Critical Drinker points it out, cargo planes don't need ejector seats, as the passengers have the option of simply using a parachute. And if the owner spent the money on an ejector seat, she could have bought a couple of parachutes, so all of them could have a way out of the plane.

The plane landing at the laboratory: I assume that they have anti-air defences at the laboratory. Why do they let the burning plane crash into the building? Wouldn't it be a lot more safe to blow it up instead of waiting to see what kind of damage it does?

Walking on ice: As RedLetterMedia points out, both Owen and the pilot have military training, yet they just walk slowly on the ice like they've never seen ice before, instead of laying flat, to distribute their weight.

Sheer luck at the lab: Luckily at exactly 30 minutes Grant and Ellie are exactly at the right meeting point they've agreed on with their guide, even though they were not trying to get there.

Letting the intruders out of the subway train: What were they planning with them? Wouldn't it be more certain if they wouldn't let the doors open, so the intruders would have to wait until security arrives?

Tracking the ejection seat: Why didn't the pilot tell the woman before shooting her out that there's a tracker in her seat, that will help them find her? So that she would have stayed around the seat, instead of wandering away?

Letting Malcolm go: Why didn't the leaders of BioSyn take this more seriously, and escort him to the airport? Why do they trust him that he'll just go after the troubles he caused?

Dimetrodons in the cave: There's quite a few of them, all of them adults. What were they eating? There seems to be nothing in the caves, just rocks. And the entrances are closed. How did they survive?

Sheer luck at the cave: Malcolm arrives at the exact minute to the cave exit, when Grant and his companions arrive there, so he could let them out before they get eaten by the Dimetrodons. Also, if he arrived a minute earlier, they wouldn't have been there yet, so he would have probably left that gate, and would have searched somewhere else.

Sheer luck in the forest: Although they don't know where Claire is, Owen and the pilot stumble into her in the very right moment to save her from an attacking dinosaur.

The locusts breaking free: It's just sheer nonsense that burning locusts would be able to break through security glass or metal panels, while being suffocated by the smoke of their own burning bodies. I also don't think that 1) burning locusts would be able to fly at leasts hundreds of meters, 2) they would be still burning while flying. After they fly away, the fire is either put out by their body fluids, or they fall, because they would need wings that were burnt away.

Sheer luck in falling: It's just unbelievable luck that the falling car with Grant and his team happens to land just at the feet of Owen and his team.

Setting the forest on fire: The forest is in the Italian Alps, that's pretty cold and wet. We even see a frozen water reservoir nearby, and deep snow on the mountain sides. For a forest to be set on fire by some burning insects, the trees need to be dry. I find it very unlikely that this could happen.

Evacuating the base: Why did the leader decide to evacuate? Shouldn't they be safer in the building than running outside to either the frozen mountains or the burning forest? Also, when they evacuate, shouldn't they wipe the sensitive data from the databanks, and switch off the computers?

Recreated dinosaurs living in peace with regular animals: They show them together with animals that belong to the same niche. That means that they would be in direct competition, leading to the extinction of one or the other. I wouldn't call that peace. (Unless it's "rest in peace".)

Lack of tension: None of the action scenes endangered any of the protagonists. And there were so many characters from previous movies that there was no ground for new characters to be a potential victim, for whom the audience would have cared. The only character that could have been a useful casualty, was the female pilot, and she made it to the end.

Everyone is incompetent: Practically every character in this movie makes rookie mistakes related to their own jobs. What's worse, there are no antagonist who would be competent enough to provide some tension and danger, and this makes the efforts and success of the protagonists less of achievement.

The plan of the bad guys: What were they actually thinking at BioSyn when they let the locusts out to destroy non-BioSyn crops? Did they hope that nobody will notice that they don't touch BioSyn-made crops? Did they hope that nobody will punish them for it? How did they plan to survive the total collapse of ecology (and economy)?

Unanswered questions

  • Did they manage to stop the giant locusts in the end? We only see an attempt at it.
  • What will happen to Sattler and Grant? Will they get together?
  • What will happen to the clone girl? Will they hide her again in another safe place?
  • Will Dr. Wu get a life sentence for what he caused with the locusts?

* * *

Possibilities of improvement

I'm not sure how would it be possible, but it would be great if there were a way to add dialogue or scenes that would explain all those lucky coincidences.

Start with the locusts. Then, you can start the news report. The locusts are the main plot of the movie, they should be the main promise, instead of showing the dinosaurs, misleading the audience.

How it could have been better?

Base the story around dinosaurs instead of locusts. Locusts might excite the creators, but the audience is interested in dinosaurs.

* * *

How does it compare to the other works of the creators?

From the works of the story writer and script writer (Colin Trevorrow), I've seen the Jurassic World movies that were acceptable. I've also seen Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019), that was mediocre, although not much remained intact from the Trevorrow script.

From the works of the story writer (Derek Connolly), I've seen Safety Not Guaranteed (2012), and Kong: Skull Island (2017) that was good. Jurassic World (2015) was acceptable, not as rushed as Jurassic World Dominion.

From the script writer (Emily Carmichael), I've seen Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), that was mediocre.

From the movies of the director (Colin Trevorrow), I've seen Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) that was fun. Jurassic World (2015) was acceptable, but that was a lot better than Dominion.

How does it compare to the other films in the series?

As I remember, it's probably the best adventure movie after Jurassic Park (1993) and Jurassic World (2015).

Uses for the film - Jurassic World 3: Dominion, movie (2022)

Plot

  • Set in a contemporary / near future alternate / fantasy setting.
  • A person creates a breed of dangerous animals (locusts).
  • Dangerous creatures get out with disastrous consequences.
  • Investigators find it out who was responsible for the situation.
  • The person responsible for the situation tries to get the evidence destroyed.

Scenes

  • The scenes for the dinosaur black market could be used to depict such thing in a fantasy or futuristic setting.
  • The fighting on ice scene could be used as an introduction to a real fight against dinosaurs.

Designs

  • I liked the look of the helicopter.

Scenario ideas - Role-playing game scenario ideas

Scenario ideas - Wargame scenario ideas

Getting the evidence: A group wants to sneak into the defender's base to find evidence for something illegal. The attackers have a couple of models, but the defenders have a lot more guards. The defender sets up the playing area, with some markers that are potential evidence for their illegal activities. The defender sets up their guards anywhere on the middle half of the playing area, and decides on a patrol route for them that could get them out of the middle half. The attacker sets up their team on any of the edges of the playing area. The attacker has to get inside the base, and touch the potential evidence markers to check them. On a roll of 1 on a d6, they have found the evidence, so give the marker to the investigating model. Otherwise, remove the marker from the game. If that is the last marker, you don't have to roll, they've found the evidence. When the defender activates a patrolling guard, they can roll a d6, on a 1, they can alter the patrol route for one movement. After a guard sees the attackers, they can be controlled normally. The attacker wins if they find the evidence, and leave the playing area, holding the evidence. The defender wins if they prevent the attacker from finding the evidence or leaving the playing area.

Locked area (harder for the attacker): There's a bottleneck the attacker has to go through, with a locked door. The defenders might have the key to the lock. If the attacker defeats or captures a defender, roll a d6. On a 1, the model has the right key. The attacker model carrying the key is able to open the door with one action.

Insider help (easier for the attacker): There's someone on the defender's side, who is willing to help the attackers. The attacker places 6 numbered markers on the playing area, then rolls a d6 dice secretly to reveal where will the traitor be. Write down the number, and reveal it to the defender when a model touches the right marker. Then the attacking model touching the marker gets the key to the locked door.

Hiding insider (harder for the attacker): The traitor can be at any of the hiding places. The markers don't need to be numbered. When an attacker model gets into line of sight with the marker, roll a d6. On a 1, you've found the right place, and deploy a model on the place of the marker. Otherwise, remove the marker. If it's the last marker, then you don't need to roll, you've found the right place.

Fighting on a platform: There's a fragile platform. Both sides can use the surface of the platform, but one of the sides is able to swim under the platform or fly above it.

Destroyable platforms: Parts of the platform can be destroyed if enough weight gets on them, or by explosions. The platforms can have structural points, that can be damaged. Larger platforms have more points, smaller ones less points.

Different moves: One side is able to swim under the platform, while the other side is able to fly above it.

Special effects (harder for one player): The areas under or above the platform cause special effects for one side. For example, they could suffocate, freeze, burn, corroded. Liquids can be under the platform, and gas can be either under or above the platform.
