This is my review of Eternals, a sci-fi / fantasy action / adventure movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe from 2021. It's about about a team of alien super-soldiers monitoring Earth to prevent alien monsters from attacking the population. The Eternals film has some interesting parts, but it's very long, so I only recommend it to dedicated fans of Marvel movies.

Review (spoiler-free) - Eternals, movie (2021)
I knew that some movie or TV series about the Eternals is going to arrive. I've also watched the first trailer (or teaser?), but I wasn't really interested. Finally, when it arrived, I took my time to watch the movie, before reviewers would start to fill the internet with spoilers. I've seen most of the previous films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, except for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).
The Eternals movie is about a team of alien super-soldiers monitoring Earth to prevent alien monsters from attacking the population.
The story itself is not bad, but very long and slow paced. At two hours, we finally get to the point that we understand the situation, and the action may finally start. The action is solved by the usual MCU-style - hit-them-until-its-done. There are no real character arcs, although we see some emotional breakdowns, you might consider those arcs if you wish. If you accept the basic premise, I don't think there are major logical problems with the plot.
Most of the screentime is spent on the gathering of the team. It would have worked a lot better with fewer characters, especially as some of them didn't really do a thing during the whole movie.
The Eternal's own speech is dubbed in English. The English speakers also sound English, but every other language is told in their own way, and it's subtitled.
The cinematography was good, the sets were interesting visually. It was hard to follow the action scenes, but at least they were short, so we didn't need to wait too long to know who was the winner.
The characters are okay, each of them had some quirks of personality. They were portrayed by the actors well.
The music (by Ramin Djawadi) is okay.
Eternals is a watchable, but very long sci-fi / fantasy action / adventure, I think only fans of the Marvel movies will enjoy it.
My experience
I was somewhat satisfied with Eternals (2021).
Rating: Average (2 out of 3 points). Eternals is a well-made film, but the story is very long.
Enjoyment: Average (2 out of 3 points). Eternals has some interesting parts.
Rewatchability: I'm not sure. I think it's mostly the surprise of the story that makes you feel interested. But if you find this story or characters engaging, you might like to watch it again.
Chance of watching it again: Very low. I don't want to spend this much time again to watch this story.
Chance of watching a sequel: I'm almost sure I'd watch it sooner or later.

Will you enjoy this?
If you cannot miss any release related to the Marvel Universe, you'll watch this anyway.
If you are interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you'll probably watch this, no matter what.
If you like super-hero movies, you might like Eternals.
If you like action movies, you might like the film, although it's not always easy to follow the action scenes in the Eternals movie.
If you like ancient alien stories, you might like Eternals, although the focus is not really on their history.
If you hate subtitles, you'll probably dislike every time they speak any foreign language except for the Eternal's own language (that's dubbed in English).
If you prefer visuals over story, Eternals might still be a good choice, as it looks good.
If you hate romantic movies, you might skip Eternals, as there's some romancing, smooching, and even a sex scene.
Do you need to see the previous films to enjoy this?
There are plenty of references to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, but those are not essential parts, and there's enough explanation for this specific story that you'll understand what's going on without seeing the previous films.
Watching for plot points
If you are interested in super-hero or ancient alien stories, I think it's worth watching the Eternals movie for the plot points.
Should you watch this on widescreen cinema, IMAX or home cinema?
There might be some scenes that look better on widescreen, but I assume you'll get a similar experience when you watch Eternals at home.
However, the IMAX version has more explicit sex scenes, so if that's your thing, go IMAX for Eternals.

Review with spoilers - Eternals, movie (2021)
I didn't really like the Eternals movie, although there were some interesting parts.
I liked it that for the basic concept, the film creators have chosen the one I consider the most interesting - that the Earth is the incubator for a Celestial baby, and the Eternals are there to protect the planet, so the baby could be born. For further information, you could read the Earth X comics.
As I've already mentioned, the actors portrayed the characters well - but these characters are Eternals, who are badly designed robots with messed up emotions. So, the main characters Ikaris and Sersi wear the same emotionless expression on their faces for most of the movie.
Cover
The cover of the movie is okay, it doesn't say much, but it doesn't spoil the movie.
The trailer
The trailer is surprisingly good. It raises interest, but doesn't spoil anything. Trailer makers could learn from this.
Promise of the first scene
A team of alien super-soldiers arrive on Earth to beat up monsters I assume that we'll see them fighting monsters that arrive on the planet, and acting like the protectors of Earth.
Execution: Well, kind of, but it was not the focus of the story. There were some twists that made this interesting, so I don't mind that the movie didn't match my expectations.

Plot summary / Synopsis
A supreme being sends teams of human-like alien super-soldiers (Eternals) to beat monsters (Deviants) in the universe. A team arrive on Earth at 5.000 BC, in Sumeria, and start beating the monsters.
Cut to contemporary London, where one of them, an alien woman (Gemma Chan as Sersi) acts as a teacher. During an earthquake, she saves a student with supernatural powers. There's another guy working in that school (Kit Harington as Dane Whitman / Black Knight). While the alien woman, the teacher guy, and another alien, a kid (Lia McHugh as Sprite) are having a stroll, an intelligent monster (Kro) attacks them. An alien warrior (Richard Madden as Ikaris) arrives to fight the monster, that flees. They are surprised, as previously the monsters didn't attack the aliens directly, nor had they regenerative abilities.
It turns out there are earthquakes all around the planet. The three aliens decide to gather the rest of the team.
Cut to 500 BC, where the supreme being reminds the alien leader (Salma Hayek as Ajak) to stick to the original plan, and do not interfere with the history of humans. We see that the rest of the aliens have plans to secretly advance the technology of humanity, in order to make their lives easier.
Cut to contemporary USA. They find the alien leader dead, killed by a monster. The communicator of the leader bonds to the alien woman. They hypotethise that the intelligent monster was able to leech the regeneration power from the alien leader, who had that.
Cut to 500 years ago, when they killed the last monster. A female warrior alien (Angelina Jolie as Thena) goes mad, and starts to fight the others. After they defeat her, she is told that she had a breakdown due to her many memories, and erasing them will help her. The mind controlling alien has enough of the problems humans cause to each other, and leaves the team. One of them, the strong alien (Don Lee as Gilgamesh) volunteers to take care of the warrior woman alien, so she could retain her memories. As the last monster is already killed, the alien leader disbands the team, and tells them to seek their own fortune in the world.
Cut to contemporary India. They recruit one of the aliens (Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo), who took up acting in Bollywood.
They travel to Australia, to meet the warrior woman alien and the strong alien. They find a dead monster there. The new alien leader is finally able to reach her boss, who tells her that the earthquakes are normal, it's the gigantic alien baby (Tiamut) that's about to emerge from the core of Earth, destroying the planet. It also turns out that the Eternals are not from the planet they though their home, but from a factory (World Forge), where they were created millions of years ago. With each emergence, the memories of the aliens are stored, than wiped from their minds. The monsters were also creations of the supreme beings, with the purpose of killing off the predators that would prevent intelligent life from thriving. But the Deviants evolved into predators, and started to endanger the original plan. As the new leader tells all of this to the others, they decide to try to protect the people of Earth, probably trying to make the gigantic alien baby sleep longer, until they come up with a solution.
They travel to the Amazon, to meet the mind controlling alien (Barry Keoghan as Druig), who has a human cult working for him. He refuses to join them. They are attacked by multiple monsters. The intelligent monsters kills one of the aliens, the strong one, and takes his power. As the rest of the monsters are killed, the intelligent monsters vows revenge, and leaves.
They travel to Chicago, to meet the engineer alien (Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos). He has a family there, with a human, including a child. He decides to join them to give future for his child.
They all go back to Iraq, and unearth their spaceship. They meet the fast alien (Lauren Ridloff as Makkari) there. They come up with the plan of uniting all of their powers in order to reach the mind of the gigantic alien baby in the Earth.
It is revealed to the viewers, that a few days ago the warrior alien found some monsters that were frozen into ice, but got out due to the raising of temperature. He showed these monsters to the alien leader. Then they got into an argument about prolonging the birth of the gigantic alien baby, so the warrior alien push the alien leader into the pack of monsters, then took her body, so they could find her in her home. The warrior alien wants to serve their makers, even if it means the death of humanity.
The warrior alien stops their work on prolonging the birth, and reveals to the others that he killed their previous leader, and he is only loyal to their boss. They have a fight, so he leaves with the kid alien. The gigantic alien baby is about to climb out, so everyone arrives. The warrior alien shoots their spaceship down. The good aliens try to stop it, the bad aliens try to stop the good aliens, the monsters try to kill everyone. The good aliens win, and they also kill the monsters. The intelligent monster tries to seduce the the female warrior alien to take her power, but he fails and he is killed by her. The good aliens manage to freeze the gigantic alien baby, probably killing it. The warrior alien flies into the sun, probably to commit suicide. The kid alien is turned into an ordinary human.
The fast alien and the mind-controlling alien decides to travel on the repaired spaceship to other Eternals to tell them the truth.
Their supreme being boss arrives, and calls forth some of the aliens (Kingo, Phastos and Sersi). He tells them that he gets it, that they killed the gigantic alien baby in order to save humanity, but he'll download their minds to judge it whether this was the right choice.
The aliens on the spaceship realise that their team mates have gone missing. They meet a horny alien (Harry Styles as Eros/Starfox), who offers help to find them.
It is also revealed that the teacher guy has some extra secrets, (being the Black Knight), and he has a vampire hunter friend (Mahershala Ali as Blade).
The setting
Historical and contemporary alternate Earth, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There is magic, super-heroes, and aliens.
Plot points of interests
The were a couple of new characters.
Forces
Celestials: Supreme beings. They put their spores into cores of planets. The spore drains energy from intelligent beings populating the planet. The Deviants interefere with this, so they send Eternals to clear the planet from the monsters, so intelligent life could thrive. It's called an emergence when a Celestial is born from the core of the planet.
Eternals: Alien super-soldiers created in the World Forge, by a supreme being, the Celestial Arishem. They are designed in a way that they are unable to evolve. This team believes that they come from the planet Olympia, and that this is their first mission, although they have been working for the Celestials for millenia. Their memory is stored in the World Forge after each succesful mission, but then it's wiped from their minds. Their spaceship is called Domo. They have the doctrine to only step in to save humanity, if Deviants are involved. Their leader has a communicator that allows them to contact their boss. When the current leader dies, the communicator goes to the next in command.
They are not invulnerable to damage caused by Deviants.
They have bracelets that switch on to receive cosmic power to regenerate their wounds, then they stop. The engineer has a hypothesis, that if he switches off the limit, they could receive unlimited power.
Deviants: Monsters that were created by the Celestials, to make sure that no native predator would endanger the flourishing of intelligent life on the planet, that's required for the Celestial spore to hatch. However, the Deviants evolved into predators, and started to prey on everything, including the intelligent beings.
The Eternal thought to have killed them all 500 years ago. Previously they just wanted to kill humans, and didn't have the power to regenerate. How the monster tried to get the Eternals.
Characters
Celestials
Arishem: A Celestial. The boss of the Eternals team of Earth.
Tiamut: A Celestial baby that grows in the core of Earth. Probably killed by Sersi.
Eternals
Sersi: Eternal. Can change non-living materials. Once accidentally transformed a living thing into another living thing (a Deviant into a tree). With the power of the Uni-Mind, she was able to transform a Celestial baby into something, and an Eternal into a regular human. Had an affair with Ikaris.
Sprite: Eternal. Can create illusions, or turn people invisible. He might be able to turn gaseous, because people can walk through the invisible form. In love with Ikaris.
Ikaris: Eternal. The most powerful of the team. Can fly, and shoot beams of energy from his eyes. This beam is so strong, he is able to down their own spaceship with a few shots. In the end he flies into the Sun.
Ajak: The leader of the Eternals. Able to regenerate. Died by the Deviant leader.
Thena: Eternal. Able to create energy weapons.
Phastus: Eternal. Engineer.
Makkari: Eternal. Speedster. Deaf? Or just mute?
Druig: Eternal. Can control the minds of people.
Kingo: Eternal. Can shoot blasts of energy from his hands.
Gilgamesh: Eternal. Can hit things really hard with his fists. Probably in love with Thena. Died by the Deviant leader.
Deviants
Kro: The leader of the Deviants. Able to get the powers out of Eternals. By the end of the story, he evolved from a simple beast, and he was able to speak. Killed by Thena.
Characters killed
Ajak: Died by the Deviant leader.
Gilgamesh: Died by the Deviant leader.
Ikaris: He flies into the Sun, so he probably dies.
Kro: Killed by Thena.
Tiamut: Probably killed by Sersi.
Technology
Eternal bracelets: When the user is wounded, it syphons cosmic energy to heal the wounds. It can be modified to syphon the energy constantly, making the wearer all-powerful.

Analysis of the story - Eternals, movie (2021)
I mostly liked the story, and apart from the basic premise, I didn't find major problems that would have prevented me from enjoying Eternals.
The message of the story
I'm not sure there's one. Probably "the abortion of babies without the consent of their parents is okay"? Or "it's okay to do bad things as long as you commit suicide after it"?
The structure of the story
The main storyline of the Eternals film is mostly played in sequence, although there's one flashback, getting just before the start of the movie. There are stories from history cut into the main storyline to tell a bit more about the characters.
There is no single viewpoint character.
The main storyline has the usual arc of the dramatic structure - beginning, action, resolution. The beginning - the gathering of forces-, however, takes up 4/5 of the story.
Things I liked
- The Eternal suits looked good.
Problematic elements
The whole premise: Supposedly, the Celestial guy, Arishem, created the Eternals specifically to serve as fighters against the Deviant monsters, and to groom intelligent life to grow more and more populous. They have been working effectively for multiple millions of years. What did he change in them after the latest memory wipe, so they become the way we see them in this movie? They are uncooperative, unstable, they break easily under pressure. Why didn't he at least make fail-safes? For example, it would be useful to have some device on the spaceship that recalibrates their fragile minds when they get corrupted. Btw, why did Arishem design them in varied racial origins (some that didn't even exist at that time), and two different sexes? Having relationships doesn't really further his goals.
Deviants: They were created so they would kill the apex predators, in order for intelligent life to flourish. However, humans are the apex predators on Earth. And humans are also intelligent. So, intelligent and apex predator is not a mutually exclusive element. So, the whole purpose of the Deviants seem to be faulty. Or at least it propagates herbivore intelligence.
No interference policy: I get it that they did this so it wouldn't be apparent why were there no Eternals in the Marvel stories previously, but if their real goal was to make sure they maximise the number of intelligent life on the planet, than stopping Thanos would have been essential for them. Especially as there was a 50% chance that Thanos would kill the Celestial baby.
Dwarf super-soldier: What is the purpose of the small soldier? It would have been great if she were given shrinking powers, so she could become smaller in order to get advantage in certain situations, but as we see in the film, most of the time Sprite feels miserable due to her size.
Deaf super-soldier: Did the supreme guy, who gathered the soldiers, intentionally choose one that was deaf? Thus, requiring the others to learn an extra form of communication, and possibly causing problems during their missions. The supreme guy seems to possess very advanced technology. Even now, we have methods to enhance hearing. Did he not have some special technology to give hearing to the soldier? (Edit: Later it is revealed that they were specifically designed to be like that. What was the purpose of her deafness?)
Ancient sign language: As pointed out on TVTropes, Makkari uses modern American Sign Language even in ancient times.
Invisible or gaseous?: When Sprite turns invisible in his seat, Ikaris sits on the same seat immediately. Is he sitting on Sprite's lap?
Unanswered questions
- Why was this batch of Eternals emotionally and mentally unstable? Did something happen to them during their latest mind-wipe?
* * *
Possibilities of improvement
It's very long, especially the gathering of forces. Some characters could be left out, who don't really serve a purpose (Sprite, Makkari, Kingo, Black Knight).
How it could have been better?
Have less characters. Or make them more interesting and essential to the story.
Instead of being created as super-soldiers, their alien consciousness could be projected into human minds. That would explain why their minds are so fragile. Also, it would explain why do they look like humans, and why do they have two sexes.
Cut the historical parts, or only include them when there's something they reference from their past.
This could probably work better as an episodic series - have something happen, get a flashback to a past event, and resolve the happening. For example, each episode could have been about a particular character, so we had the chance to see them in their prime, and see them now, how they've changed after the disbanding.
* * *
How does it compare to the other works of the creators?
I haven't seen any other works of the writer / director (Chloé Zhao).
I also haven't seen anything from the rest of the writers (Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, Kaz Firpo).
How does it compare to the original source?
I've read the reboot series by Neil Gaiman, but I have to admit I don't remember much of it.
I didn't read the original series, but I know some of its background information.
Similarities:
- The Celestials created the Eternals and the Deviants.
- There is plenty of exposition, spelling out setting information for the audience.
- A Celestial spaceship is unearthed, containing anciend devices that help the Eternals team.
- After finding the Celestial spaceship, they are able to communicate with Makkari. (In the movie, he is already on the spaceship.)
- The Eternals join to create the Uni-Mind.
- Kro tries to seduce Thena. (In the comics, they had a relationship in the past.)
- One of the Eternals (Gilgamesh) meets a Celestial in space.
- Gilgamesh dies while he saves the Earth from Deviants. In the comics, he stopped a bomb, in the movie, he died fighting Kro.)
Differences:
- The Celestial didn't plant their offsprings into planets to incubate, they intended to uplift the inhabitants of the planets.
- The Celestials also created the humans, to be the third faction, beyond the Eternals and Deviants. All three factions were created from the primates of Earth.
- Eternals are all good guys, even if they have their differences. They wouldn't murder each other.
- The Deviants are not mindless monsters, but intelligent beings, just like the Eternals, although they are a changing breed. They have some problems with the Eternals, but they are mostly on speaking terms with each other.
How does it compare to the other films in the series?
I think it's more boring than most of the other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Black Widow (2021) was also bad, so choose something else if you want to be entertained.
The Avengers movies were similarly epic stories, so if you'd like to see something like Eternals, but better, check those.
My favourites from the MCU were the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, so I recommend those, but your mileage might vary.

Behind the scenes
Thoughts about the reviews of others
Some reviews call the Eternals "the worst Marvel movie ever", but that's not true. Most of the Marvel movies from the previous century were way worse, just check the made for TV Spider-Man (1977, 1978, 1981) movies, or even Captain America (1990). Even if they mean "the worst Marvel Cinematic Universe movie ever", it's still debatable. Eternals is not a masterpiece for sure, but it feels on par to me with Thor: The Dark World (2013), Black Panther (2018), Captain Marvel (2019), or Black Widow (2021).

Uses for the film - Eternals, movie (2021)
Plot
- A powerful being sends super-soldiers to bring order to the area.
- Alien sentries are forbidden to interfere with the natural evolution of locals.
Scenes
- When the monsters attack the people in the beginning, it's a good depiction of primitive people fighting against monsters.
Scenario ideas - Role-playing game scenario ideas
- A team of very advanced soldiers are sent to a primitive planet to kill the invading alien monsters.
- They are forbidden to interfere with the natural evolution of the people living there
- A team of very advanced characters are sent to prepare a primitive planet for the invasion of monsters.
Scenario ideas - Wargame scenario ideas
- Monster attack: When you set up your game, and the defenders are already deployed, instead of their regular enemies, a couple of monsters show up. The monsters have a tough hide, so they are invulnerable to the regular infantry weapons, but the strongest weapons of the defenders can hurt them. However, they are very tough, so it takes multiple hits to take even one down. They also have random abilities (d6): 1: multiple actions, 2: regeneration, 3: breath weapon, 4: ranged attacks (shooting spikes, tentacles), 5: flying, 6: swimming / burrowing (depending on the playing area). From the second turn, roll a d6. On a roll of 1, a monster hunter appears in the middle of the playing area. The monster hunter has damage like the strongest weapon of the defenders, has armour like the strongest armour, but also has random abilities (d6): 1-3: multiple actions, 4: flying, 5: super strong melee weapon, 6: super strong ranged weapon. Even after the first monster hunter appears, continue rolling at the beginning of each turn.
- Harder version: When the first monster hunter appears, stop rolling.
- Mind controlled army: There's a mind controller on one of the sides. The units under his command do exactly what he wants, without error or hesitation. Every time a model in their units gets out of the game, roll a d6. On a 6 the mind controller loses control, and loses his ability for control for the rest of the game.
- Destroy the objective: The defender has few but poweful units. The attacker is more numerous, but less powerful. There's an objective in the middle of the playing area, that one of the attackers has to reach, and spend some actions on, so it gets disabled. The attacker wins if the objective is disabled by the end of turn N. The defender wins if they stop the attackers disabling the objective.
- Harder version - bad weather: The playing area is struck by storm, or even earthquakes.
- Harder version - the chosen one: Before the game, the attacking player chooses one of their models to have the ability to disable the objective. Write this down. Only the chosen model will be able to complete the mission.
- Harder version - monster rampage: Monsters with random abilities enter from the edges of the playing area. They attack the closest non-monster model.
Miniatures - 1/50-1/60 (28-32mm scale)
Eternals: Human-sized futuristic / fantasy human warriors. Most of them don't have weapons.
Monsters: Any kind of monsters you have in your collection. Preferable ones with many teeth, spikes, and claws.
