This is my review of Dead Dicks, a contemporary fantasy / supernatural horror thriller / comedy movie from 2019. It's about a girl trying to help her troubled brother. The Dead Dicks film is interesting, I recommend it to fans of the genre.

If you'd like to be surprised by the Dead Dicks film, I don't recommend you to watch the trailer. It practically starts with spoilers.

Review (spoiler-free) - Dead Dicks, movie (2019)

I didn't know anything about this movie before I was offered the chance to watch it. The premise looked interesting, so I took the opportunity, and watched it without checking the trailer.

The Dead Dicks movie is about a girl trying to help her troubled brother.

It has an interesting concept, and some interesting twists, but overall, it was a bit too long. However, I feel that there's a seed for an interesting story, that might be good for a remake. The consistency was mostly okay. The balance between horror and comedy was good. There were no character arcs. I didn't find major logical problems.

The title is good, it's a good fit for the movie.

The cinematography was okay.

The characters are good. We get to know them enough to care about them. The actors were okay.

The music (by Julien Verschooris) is okay. (Update: I've listened to the soundtrack album, and it's actually good. When I was watching the film, I was too occupied with the happenings to appreciate the score.)

As an aside, we see more dicks in the movie that belong to living people than dead ones, as this film is somewhat naturalistic.

Dead Dicks is an interesting contemporary fantasy / supernatural horror thriller / comedy, I think fans of the genre will enjoy it.

My experience

I was mostly satisfied with Dead Dicks (2019).

Rating: Average (2 out of 3 points). Dead Dicks is a watchable film.

Enjoyment: Good (2+ out of 3 points). Dead Dicks is interesting and funny, I liked it.

Rewatchability: I'm not sure. I think it's mostly the surprise of the story that makes you feel interested, but the weird style of the movie might engage you in ways that you'd like to experience it more than once.

Chance of watching it again: There's a chance. Now that I know the story, there's probably no need to watch it again, but I liked it enough that I might watch it in the right circumstances.

Chance of watching a sequel: High. I'd sure watch it.

There are some great covers for the movie. They don't say much, but they don't spoil the movie. Some of them are more confusing than interesting.

The trailer

The trailer is okay, although it spoils some minor parts of the movie.

If you prefer spoilers, it's a great trailer for the Dead Dicks film. If you prefer to avoid spoilers, it will make the movie less fun for you.

Promise of the first scene

We see a guy committing suicide. It's an intriguing start, and I have no clue where would they take this.

Execution: Indeed, I couldn't have guessed the following story.

Plot summary / Synopsis

A girl (Jillian Harris as Becca) gets accepted into a university. She cares for her brother (Hestor Horwin as Richie), who has mental health issues.

When she visits him to tell the news, he finds his dead body. But then, her brother enters the room. He tells her, that every time he commits suicide, he reappears in his bed, naked.

He took notes every time he killed himself, and he even wanted to capture it on camera, but the event of rebirth causes electric problems, so the camera just records noise at that time. That's why he ask the girl to keep watch while he kills himself, so she'll be able to see what happens.

The girl refuses first, but then she stays, and after he dies, she sees that a new body is born out of the wall of the bedroom.

As the house supervisor will visit the next day, they start to get rid of the accumulating carcasses by sawing them into pieces, and putting them in the trash.

The girl drinks something from the kitchen, and sleeps for a while.

The neighbour below (Matt Keyes as Matt), getting tired of the noise, visits them, and after the neighbour threatens them, the brother recommends to kill him. The neighbour panics, and he dies in an accident. A new body starts to born from the bedroom wall, while the girl tries to resuscitate the body. She succeeds in waking the neighbour, but this causes the newborn body to go frenzy. The newborn body kills the original, and attacks the brother, but they bash his head, killing him. They wait for his rebirth, but nothing happens. They suspect that there was no brain to use for recreating the memories, that's why there was no rebirth.

The girl find her own body in a closet. Her brother confesses that she died when she drank the poison he mixed for his suicide, and that she is in a reborn body. When the girl tries to leave the flat, she is unable to do so, and the brother tells him that it's a problem with reborn bodies, they have to remain here.

He hopes that if he dies a final death, it will let the girl free, so he closes the girl in the bedroom, and blows his head with a gun. He is not reborn. The girl attacks the bedroom wall with a hammer, causing it to bleed, then she enters the tunnel she finds after breaking the wall.

The setting

It is set on an alternate contemporary Earth. On this world, there is a magical force that is able to recreate dead beings.

The hole

When someone dies a clinical death in the flat that the hole is part of, it recreates the body, and starts to copy the memory. If they are able to resuscitate the body, the memory is not copied properly, creating a mindless copy that has to kill the original to get memories. The mindless copy might also have physical defects. If there is no brain remaining, it doesn't start the recreation process.

The recreated cannot leave the flat, they can't move any parts of their body outside.

The message of the story

I'm not sure there's one.

The structure of the story

The scenes of the Dead Dicks film are mostly sequential, following the same storyline. There were some flashbacks.

There is no single viewpoint character.

It has the truncated arc of the dramatic structure - introduction, action, and an abrupt ending without a conclusion. The resolution it is left to the imagination of the viewer.

Resurrection device: The defender has a device that allows the temporary resurrection of their units. The defending side sets up the playing area, including defensible base, and a device. Then the game starts normally. Every time a defender model is taken out, you need to test if it dies, or if it's just unconscious. If it dies, although the original dead body remains on the battleground, the unit re-spawns, with the model touching the device. It is assumed there's also an armoury, so the model is able to rearm itself. The attacker models can try to capture the defender models, to avoid their resurrections. The device can be destroyed, and that stops the resurrections. The defender needs to mark the resurrected units, as after the game, they will still count as casualties.

Limited distance: The resurrected units can't move beyond the range of the device. It can be the full area of the defender's base, or there can be a radius around the device, that the resurrected models can't leave. If they are moved beyond that by an outside force, they die, and get removed from the game.
