"It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well."

Review (spoiler-free) - 28 Years Later, movie (2025)
I love 28 Days Later (2002), so I was intrigued when I've heard a sequel is coming. I've seen the previous movies, but I didn't watch the trailer, to avoid potential spoilers.
The 28 Years Later movie is about a kid trying to save his family in a post-apocalyptic world.
The story (by Alex Garland) is sadly mediocre. There is a character arc for the main character, but this is somewhat negated by the sudden ending.
The cinematography is beyond expectations. Every scene is interesting visually.
The characters are okay, although compared to the screen-time they get, we don't get to know them. The actors are good in their roles.
The music (by Young Fathers) is fine.
28 Years Later is a watchable post-apocalyptic adventure, that I think only fans of the genre will enjoy.
My experience
I was not entirely satisfied with 28 Years Later (2025). Although I happen to like stories with well-thought plots, and 28 Years Later delivered just that, but I didn't feel the story engaging enough.
Rating: Average (2 out of 3 points). 28 Years Later is a watchable film.
Enjoyment: Average (2 out of 3 points). 28 Years Later is mediocre, I didn't liked it as much.
Rewatchability: I'm not sure. I think it's mostly the surprises in the story that makes you feel interested. So, after watching it once, you wouldn't get more from the movie.
Chance of watching it again: Low. Now that I know the story, I don't feel the need to watch it again.
Chance of watching a sequel: High. I still hope they can make a good movie.

Will you enjoy this?
If you like zombie horror movies, you might like 28 Years Later.
If you like horror or action thriller movies (Alien, Life, Splice), you might like the film, although there are not many action scenes or scary scenes in the 28 Years Later movie.
If you'd like to get comedic moments in your movies, 28 Years Later will disappoint you, as it's mostly serious.
If you feel that the first half hour of the movie is too slow, it will only get slower later on, so you might consider skipping to the end.
If you enjoyed the 28 Days Later movie (2002), you might be interested in this story.
If you prefer visuals over story, then you are in luck, because this movie looks gorgeous even if you don't care about the plot.
If you hate zombie movies, this film won't change your mind, and you should probably avoid it.
Do you need to see the previous films to enjoy this?
Although there's enough explanation that you'll understand what's going on without seeing the first films, I still recommend you to watch the first movie, to establish the setting.
Do you need to see the second film to enjoy this?
As this film is an open-ended story, I feel that watching the two movies together might give you a better experience.
Watching for plot points
If you are interested in zombie stories, it might be worth watching the 28 Years Later movie for the implications in the changes of the infection, but reading the plot summary might suffice.

Review with spoilers - 28 Years Later, movie (2025)
I didn't really like the 28 Years Later movie. I probably wouldn't have watched this movie, if it were not part of the 28 Days Later series. However, there is practically nothing that would link the two stories together, beyond being set in the UK.
Cover
The cover of the movie is okay, it doesn't say much, but it doesn't spoil the movie.
The trailer
The trailer is okay, although it spoils some minor parts of the movie.
Promise of the first scene
We see the home of a family being overrun by raging infected. A child escapes from the carnage. I assume we will see him trying to survive in an unfamiliar environment.
Execution: After the time gap, I thought that the father of the kid was the child from the beginning. As the movie didn't contradict this, I didn't mind it, until the end of the movie, where the grown-up version of that child appeared, turning all of my previous thoughts on their head. However, I didn't feel that it was a great twist, it felt like cheating.

Plot summary / Synopsis
2002: We see a young boy (Jimmy Crystal), at the beginning of the outbreak of the rage virus. When his home is attacked by the infected, he escapes to the church where his father is a priest. The priest see the infection as a religious sign, so instead of escaping with the boy, he welcomes the infected, allowing them to kill him.
2030: While the rest of the world managed to fight off the infection, they couldn't come up with a cure. That's why the British Isles are sealed off under a strict quarantine (Unconditional Isolation Zone) to contain the infection.. There are isolated pockets of survivors, living in primitive conditions.
In one of those communities, we meet a teenage kid (Alfie Williams as Spike). His father (Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie) is a scavenger. His mother (Jodie Comer as Isla) is bedridden, and has delusions due to mental instability. They live on an island, providing them defence against the infected.
The kid goes on his first scavenger hunt with his father, armed with bows. They are attacked by the infected, whose leader is an evolved infected, who can order the other, less intelligent infected. After they run out of arrows, they get trapped in an abandoned building, so they spend their night there. The father forces the kid to kill a restrained infected. At night, the kid sees patrol boats on the sea, and a large fire. After sunrise, they run back to their village, and the guards kill the pursuing infected. It takes several shots to put their leader down.
After their return, they celebrate his first hunt, and the father tells tall tales about the bravery of the kid, to his embarrassment. During the celebration, the kid sees the father kissing a woman, making him uncomfortable. When the kid talks about his trip, one of the villagers tell the kid that the fire was probably lit by a deranged, reclusive doctor. The kid hopes to get a cure for his mother, and when his father refuses to seek help, he decides to take matters into his own hand. He convinces her mother to come with him, and they leave the village to find that doctor. He sets fire to a building, and they slip out in the confusion.
The kid and his mother are attacked by the infected, and they are saved by a soldier (Edvin Ryding as Erik Sundqvist). The soldier is the last survivor of a group of stranded NATO marines. They meet a pregnant infected in labour, and they help her to give birth to a girl. The infected woman is killed by the soldier, to prevent her from attacking the group. This enrages an infected leader (Chi Lewis-Parry as Samson) hiding nearby, killing the soldier by tearing his head off.
The kid and his mother take the baby, and try to escape from the infected leader. Although the kid wounds him with arrows, but the infected leader catches him. Suddenly, the kid is saved by a stranger, who uses a blowgun to tranquillise the infected leader. The stranger is the doctor (Ralph Fiennes as Dr Ian Kelson) they were looking for. The doctor brings them to his home, and shows them his skull monument, he built from the remains of humans. The doctor adds the skull of the soldier to the skull monument, and tells them that he made this to preserve their memory.
The doctor examines the mother, and comes to the conclusion that she has late‑stage terminal brain cancer, and there is no cure for that. The kid is stricken, but the doctor comforts him that her memory will remain with him. The kid's mother accepts her fate, and asks the doctor to end her suffering. After her request is fulfilled, the doctor gives her skull to the kid, so he could place it atop the skull monument.
The infected leader breaks into the doctor's refuge. The kid manages to sedate him with a tranquilliser dart. The kid leaves the baby at the gate of the village, with a letter, explaining that he will return when he feels he is ready.
28 days later, the kid wanders alone, when he is attacked by some infected. He is saved by a group dressed in matching tracksuits, who use martial arts to subdue the infected. Their leader (Jack O'Connell as Sir Jimmy Crystal) is the young boy from the beginning of the movie, who is now an adult.
The setting
The British Isles are a quarantine zone, infested with rage zombies, who are mindless and violent.
The world outside this zone managed to eradicate the infection. Europe seems to have achievements similar to our real-life technology. They patrol the waters around the British Isles, to maintain the quarantine. When someone lands in the quarantine zone, they won't get rescued, they have to remain there.
The infected
The infected were originally entirely mindless, neglecting their basic needs, leading to their deaths soon after getting infected. I also think, that because they were infected by a mutated strain of ebola, they died because of getting infected.
Assuming that the infected we see in the movie were infected a long time ago, they seem to be able to survive for longer. They also keep enough of their intelligence to be able to fend for themselves. They eat whatever is edible. They are only shown eating animals, but I assume they also eat plants to sustain their bodies.
This probably means that either the infection mutated to be less deadly, or those infected, who died soon, are already dead, and we only see the exceptions.
There are Alpha infected, who are implied to be able to give orders to the others. We don't see how this happens, but the infected around them are more organised.
Pregnant infected are able to birth uninfected children.
If they are injected with morphine, it renders them non-responsive.
Dr. Kelson uses iodine as protection against the infection. This probably means it is useful against the virus.

Analysis of the story - 28 Years Later, movie (2025)
I think the story was fine, I just didn't find it engaging enough that I could enjoy 28 Years Later.
The message of the story
I'm not sure there's one.
The structure of the story
The scenes of the 28 Years Later film are played in sequence, following the same storyline.
There's no single viewpoint character.
It has the usual arc of the dramatic structure - introduction, action, resolution.
Fan-service
Scenes and elements from previous works:
28 Days Later (2002)
- HELL: In 28 Days Later, it's the start of a "hello" being written. In 28 Years Later, it's the remains of "Shell" sign.
- No introduction: 28 Days Later starts with the protagonist waking from a coma, and starting the story without further introduction. Something similar happen in 28 Years Later, as Spike starts his journey without introducing him first.
28 Weeks Later (2007)
- The beginning: The beginning is similar to the beginning of 28 Weeks Later, as a character tries to escape from the infected of the initial breakout.
- The shoot-out: There are some shots included from the final shoot-out of 28 Weeks Later.
Things I liked
- The setting and the chosen locations look good, creating beautiful scenes.
Problematic elements
The plot: I have no idea what was the intention with this movie. I don't know what is the main plot.
The unrelated beginning: The movie opens with scenes involving characters we won't see for the rest of the movie, until the very end. I hoped that the creators will tie the beginning to the story somehow, but that didn't come.
The info text: After the first scene, an info text is dumped on us, immediately getting us out of immersion. Also, it's so vague, we practically don't get enough setting information to understand the state of the world. For the knowledge of an inhabitant of the UK, it might be realistic, but for an audience point of view, it's too brief.
Lack of introduction: The story starts with the kid and the father going on a scavenger hunt, without getting to know their regular daily routine. Then, during their trip, they don't talk, unless necessary. We get a bit more information about their lives when they return, but it would have been better to include that before they leave. This sudden start worked for 28 Days Later (2002), because the characters lived in our contemporary world. However, in this movie, we don't know what happened here for the past 28 years.
Lack of information: While it's not a necessity, it would really help to understand the movie better, if we had more insight into the biology of the infection. Either as explained by Jamie, or a more refined version by Dr. Kelson. The sooner it arrives in the story, the better, because the lack of explanations can be confusing.
Clips from old movies: There are a couple of scenes interrupted by quick shots from old movies. I felt this only provided unnecessary distractions for me.
Retiring the father to introduce a new protector: Although the contrast was slightly interesting, the father could have stayed with his family, so we didn't need to spend time introducing a new character.
The open ending: The story is not finished by the end of the movie. This makes this whole film a 2 hour long prologue to the sequel. I would have preferred a complete, closed story, with an open plot-line to be continued.
Sir Jimmy: The movie starts with Jimmy, it ends with Jimmy, and there are several references to him during the movie. The whole story could have been cut shorter, and they could have made this a movie about Jimmy. Instead of that, we spend the beginning, wondering where would they take the story with Jimmy, and then, by the time we have realised this is not going to be his story, we get a short glimpse of Jimmy before the movie ends.
Unanswered questions
- Did the infection become less deadly? Were the infected we see got infected a long time ago or just recently?
- How does the infected leader communicate with the others?
- What's the deal with the doctor?(We will probably get an answer in the sequel.)
- What did the father do while the kid and the mother were away? Will he go after his child?
- What will happen to the kid? (We will probably get an answer in the sequel.)
* * *
Possibilities of improvement
Lack of introduction: Add dialogue, allowing the kid to explain the setting. For example, once they have returned, the knowledge of the kid will be tested by the village elders. This would help the audience understand what kind of society they live in, and how does the infection work.
The info text: Add background dialogue during the settlement scenes, when school children recite their history lessons, or a teacher explains it to them.
Lack of information: Add dialogue to the movie, explaining the background.
Sir Jimmy: Cut the beginning and the ending, so Sir Jimmy wouldn't distract the audience. [Update: As Jimmy will play a major role in 28 Years Later 2: The Bone Temple (2026), and that movie doesn't have a proper beginning, add these scenes there.]
Clips from old movies: Cut these to create a more immersive experience.
Erik: I feel that this character is not necessary to the plot. I'm not sure if he could be cut from the movie.
How it could have been better?
The infection: There are several theories about the evolution of the infection. However, in the movie, we don't see how the infection happens, and how does it affect the infected in the long run. It would have been better if we had seen infections happening, and the outcomes of those.
It would be great if some additional dialogue could solve this problem, but I don't see a way how to do that.
* * *
How does it compare to the other works of the creators?
I have seen plenty of works of the writer (Alex Garland). The The Beach (2000), 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007), Never Let Me Go (2010), and Dredd (2012) were good, and all of them were more interesting than this movie. Ex Machina (2014) was weak, and I consider 28 Years Later slightly better. 28 Years Later 2: The Bone Temple (2026) is probably his weakest movie I have watched.
I have seen many movies from the director (Danny Boyle), and I liked all of them. I feel that 28 Years Later was not as strong as the rest of his works.
How does it compare to the other films in the series?
28 Days Later (2002) is a better movie, with similar themes. The movie was created by the same writer and director. 28 Years Later adds some variety to the infected.
28 Weeks Later (2007) is a different kind of movie, so it's hard to compare them.
* * *
Behind the scenes
Thoughts about the reviews of others
Many reviewers point out elements they consider plot holes. However, I feel most of these have nothing to do with the plot, and they are certainly not holes.
- The infected: Some argue that the infected we see in this movie are not consistent with the ones we have seen in the previous movies. That is true, however, we didn't get a proper research on them, so it is entirely possible that there are different symptoms or even different strains of infection. The creators really could have spent some time explaining these changes.
- The infected in mainland Europe: 28 Weeks Later (2007) ended with infected reaching France. However, we didn't get to see any more of that, and they say in this movie they have contained the infection to Europe. The writer said in an interview, that Paris got nuked to get rid of the infected.
- Sir Jimmy: There are reviewers who feel that the sudden appearance of Sir Jimmy with no previous setup was a plot hole. While that seen really lacks proper setup, there were scenes throughout the movie that hinted on a mysterious Jimmy. I also feel, though, that there should have been a lot more preparations.

- An infection transforms humans into murderous monsters.
- After a deadly virus outbreak, there are pockets of survivors living in isolation.
- There are murderous infected roaming the countryside.
- A child is trying to save their parent from a deadly illness.
Scenes
When the infected overrun the church in the beginning, it's a great way to show how a priest could react, if he believed it's the sign of the second coming.
When they try to escape from the infected in the woods, it is a good way to show how to confront dangerous enemies.
When they celebrate their return, it is a good way to show a celebration in an archaic society.
Scenario ideas - Role-playing game scenario ideas
The mutated infection: There was a deadly virus that wiped out the population. A community survived due to being isolated. Recently, however, the infection seems to be changing, threatening the survival of the community. The team is sent out to investigate.
- Research the infection:
- Capture infected people
- Observe the behaviour of the infected
- Twist: It's not the infection that has changed, but the people of the community.
- Twist: There are people in the community, already aware of the changes. They either profit from this change, or they try to hide it, to remain in position. When the characters try to come back, they are hindered by these people.
The cure: A relative of the characters got a deadly illness. They are asked to find a cure.
Rescue party: A relative of the characters went missing in a quarantined zone. They have to hurry to help them, otherwise they will get lost.

The group: As the character travel through an area, they find signs that show the presence of a group of people. When they finally meet that group, those signs provide them clues how to handle the situation. It helps them to prepare for a battle, if they are hostile. It gives them insight into their beliefs, if they belong to a religious cult.
- Signs: a name written on a ruin, a name cut into a body, a name carved into trees or path markers.
- If the characters spend additional time researching those signs, or if they spend time to look for more signs, it will give them more clues.
Scenario ideas - Wargame scenario ideas
Scavenger escape: A team of scavengers try to reach their base, while they are chased by their enemies. The base has good defences. The team is not armed to deal with their enemies. The scavengers win, if the team enters the base. The enemies win, if they incapacitate more than half of the team members.
